  • So the sensor on the radiotor is a water temp sensor? Not an actual actuator of the fan?

Oh i see. Yep i used to have a switch on my dash, but got sick of it, and wanted to get it back to original.. but am finding it a little hard

Its a switch sorry, well a sensor too, as it should have 85 degree ish written on it, , Needs power to trigger it though, so its not a earth switch

      • whoa! still sounds vague.

the switch on the radiator is a normal everyday continuity switch that switches on above the temp written on the switch.
if you want to wire in a relay, so that the full fan current isnt going through the fuse box ( a good idea, and what the OP has said he tried to do) then all you do is run +12V to the fan switch on the radiator, and run that to the relay that is switching the fan on and off.

The only things that go to ground are the fan and the relay ground wire.

the way you described it in your original post, sounds like when water temp gets high enough the switch will just earth out the 12V... not good!

        • mine have always been setup that way,
The switch on the side of radiator uses power from fusebox, so as soon as the switch closes, BAMM, fan on. Easy.

BTW, you should be able to use the switch on side of radiator on the earth side of the Relay. Well i cant see why not anyway.

Have the power wire from battery to Relay, then from relay to fan. earth the fan to chassis, wire relay to a 12v source that goes on with ignition, then earth relay using switch on radiator. soon as it gets hot, the switch will close and complete the circuit. = Fan

Thats how id do it anyway, dunno if its right though. I dont like idea of Power going through a switch thats on your dash. rather use a switch on the earth.

          • this diagram could help

Always use a fuse from battery to relay though, 20 amp should do

            • I dunno what you are all talking about!? That looks mad, thats how its suposta look not the gay **** thats being passed off as stretch these days.

It looks just like my 8's.

              Straight up WIN.

Dangerous? Like cut springs and a 30yr old mk1 arn't dangerous? lol

If he can understand the diagram above he wouldn't have a problem getting his fan to work

              • Well my front coilovers finally came in. I got ST coils from the states. I put them in, and i noticed something. So i have two very important questions to ask

                1) i've adjusted both coils to identical level, and one side sits higher than the other? Body flex? Or wtf?

                2) Will i had the bonnet open, i noticed my left side engine mount, has cracked. And its not the rubber bit, its the actual metal mount. So im thinking, knock it back up, and then weld it? Does anyone have any advice on that?
                Cheers

Did you replace the top mounts, if not, I'd assume there is the problem.

                  • What Mick said.

Or... Your chassis could be a bit twisted.. Guard could be off a bit..

Measure the distance from the centre of the headlights to the ground both sides. That'll tell you if the front end is level at least.

                    • did you get front and rear st's?
Or just fronts? going to handle funny i reckon :S

And yeah, i got all mine adjusted fine, but i got 5mm lower on front passenger and rear drivers. I has no engine in it yet, so that could be an issue haha

                      • Oh ok, well i havnt replaced the strup tops, and with that said, is it just the bearing replaced, or the rubbers etc too?

And Dan, it handles fine bro Alot better than i though hehe. I dont have the damber/helped spring in the rear, i did that so i can drop it lower, and it rides just fine

The ST's are stiff, however are perfect, and i dont feel any bumps etc. !! Happy Chappy i am

Sure, you should prioritize that over fraudulent Japanese car parts, out of date racing harnesses, and ricing out your German car.

                            • FYI, i had the seat a while before the mount had cracked.

And thanks mate, i'll just do what every other golf owner does and copy their mods. Its called individuality, and no offence, you have a mk1, do it however you like. I respect your opinion, but i didnt ask for your ridicule.
