So I was kindly given a 3 spoke GTI rim from Liam.
It came with 4 broken retaining clips and a non functional horn but I did not let that deter me.
So I have nutted out a method to repair these suckers, just need to get creative with parts and as I have done one now, I reckon I can refurb one in about an hour.
And the finished product is precisely what was needed.
In other news, gauges shipped for the DIN panel late last week. I think I will wire up some foot well lights when I install those as well.
The steering wheel and fire extinguishers look the business, mate! Very nice. Try some 303 on the wheel if you have time to let it soak in.... It'll bring the horn button and grip up really nice.
Good stuff! Glad to hear it fitted up well too, mate.
I'll send the rear mount when the 90 degree dizzy caps turn up.. I'm hoping like hell they turn up before I go to Geelong on Thursday.. I want to fit mine before I leave!
I am thinking that I speak to you down the track about getting the rocker cover, oil filter housing, the upper strut brace and the intake manifold all blasted some time so I can have someone paint them up - considering hammer tone black.
That rocker cover is wrinkle coat. Awesome stuff.
I recently did an SR20 rocket cover the same way, black wrinkles and polished lettering.
And have you noticed that if you touch the spokes of the steering wheel for whatever reason the oil from fingies is highly visible?
Annoying, buffed mine every day.
I just read all 34 pages of this thread and congratulate you mikinoz. I love my MKV GTI but I drool over this beautiful MK1
Thanks mate, it is really nice to have others get something out of all of the hard work that has gone into beast this over the past 18 months. I've had some highs and lows, that is for sure.
Jace - I've only whacked it in but not driven it, I'll polish it up and treat the plastic soon - yeah and buy a special cloth to make sure it is shiny all the time!

Yeah no worries dude. I can also polish the ribs for you if you so desire.
I went wrinkle finish originally but the can leaked and I got uneven coverage.. I wasn't happy with it so I blasted it all off and did it satin black.
You could always look for another rocker cover so you can go nuts with it and then swap it over.. They go on Ebay for fairly cheap.. Just make sure you get a KR/PL/9a one as the ABF ones are slightly different and take a different gasket etc. Inlet manifold is a bit too expensive to go doing that with, though... Haha.
So the car had a bit of airtime again this week on Packed to the Rafters. Should be at least a small amount more in the season, but you'll have to wait and see.
