  • Hmmm, found the souce of my 'roughness' when hitting a 15mm step in the road...

Turns out that the car is sitting 10mm off the front bump stops without me in it...
If I sit on the front quater panel, it bottoms out...

Now to figure out how to fix it...
First I'll need to check driveshaft to chassis clearance, as the car doesn't appear to sit too low.
Then I'll probably trim the bump stop to give more clearance, but still not allow the driveshaft to hit the chassis...
But I'm definately open to suggestions...

    • Spent a few hours wasted time trying to fix Cabriolet electric roof,Aerial and electric windows to no avail.

      • I looked into my electric roof issues, and found that my hydrolic pump was completely missing...

Interestingly, according to the manual, the key needs to be in the ignition in the off position for the electric roof to work.
Doesn't work that way on mine, as the relay's click regardless of the key / ignition, but it may help with your troubleshooting...

        • Hmmm, had a weird noise coming from my rear right wheel on the weekend...
Decided not to risk it, and took it off.

Found that the stub axle nut had loosened by 3 turns, and that the noise was a loose spring in the drum...
The nut retainer was too short to actually stop the nut spinning till it had undone a little.
Put an extra washer under the nut to space it back into the retainer properly, and all good...

Also, figured out found that the last guy to work on this drum must have really not cared...
Both of the pins / springs / retainers that hold the pads to the backing plate are completely missing.

          • Isn't it time you started your own thread Michael?

Hope you didn't get too wet leaving the racing on Friday night.

            Cheers

            • I did have a thread over on the CBRVWOC forum, but it seems to have gone offline...
              I really should start another...

Thankfully the roof really only leaks with standing water, and even then, it runs down the inner roof to either side of the car...\
Still, I really should get it fixed... I hate having to put a tarp on the roof when I know it's going to rain...

Paul, I've been meaning to ask you for a while, do you happen to still have any Mk1 bits lying arround?

              Thanks
              Michael

              • I've got nothing left. Track down Nick from VolksSpares - he's still got over 50 MK1's in his yard at Bungendore. All slowly rusting away.......

                • Did a whole heap of little things today and yesterday. Cleaned up heaps of wiring. Got rid of the ABF idle stabiliser valve completely, it works really crap with the haltech. Instead I now have a little solenoid that opens up an air bypass to bump up the idle slightly whenever the thermal fan kicks in, and I set up a switch on the dash as well to bump it up for cold starts during winter, or whenever I might want a faster idle. Much simpler, and a lot cleaner in the engine bay too.

Style of the idle-up button may be a little incongruous, but who cares:

The solenoid hidden back where the brake booster is:

Nothing but a shiny alloy bung where the ISV and associated plumbing used to be:

Scratched away at a small rust spot on the passenger side floor, I'm going to have to cut a little piece out way up in the front corner (water was leaking where the antenna cable goes through the wheel well). Treated it so it doesn't get any worse and will start on that soon. I'm probably going to have to rip up the entire floor sealant to ensure everything is ok, really not looking forward to that job.

Next up, a big brake refresh, new braided lines all round and new slotted rotors. Hopefully that will yield results when the supersprint rolls around in May..

                  • I was about to kick it, when it fixed itself...
                    lol.

Really though, I wouldn't have kicked it, no matter how much it deserved it.

                            • Fixed my lefthand wiper today...

Driving along in torential rain (well for Canberra anyway), the left wiper decided it wanted to be on the righthand side...
Thankfully it missed the other wiper and then just sat at the bottom of the windscreen...
Not the most fun rest of the trip... Used the wipers as little as possible so as to not strip out the splines anymore than needed...

Once at work, I grabbed a pair of pliers from my desk, and then tightened the nut...
                              All good now...

Try doing that on a newer car... lol.
