smashed the prep work this week (sanding and making the doors dead straight), and by the time I'm done tomorrow the whole car should be very close to being ready for primer. Most panels are already quickly coated in Hi-fill primer

A pattern seems to be forming...
I have been noticing a creaking sound when turning at low speeds. I got my wife to move the steering wheel left and right while I checked the rack, turns out as I suspected there was some movement in the drivers side bracket.
Pulled things apart and I found 2 hairline cracks down underneath where the bracket is spot welded to the underside. So time to reinforce the sucker. I mainly seam welded all the various joins, but I also added a couple of extra pieces in for bracing. Should be right now! I already had a piece of flat bar joining both brackets (you can see the underside of it in the pics) and this still happened. I'd recommend checking your mk1's so you catch this before the cracks get nasty, or worse still the bracket comes right off.
Had a cracked bracket on my mk 1 cabby when I first bought it. Apparently a reasonably common issue caused by the larger (185/195 tyres) being turned alot at low speed. SO I wouldn't be surprised that any mk 1 with some more serious rubber and/or serious usage having this sort of issue.

Yep, the cabrios have more weight too, as does mine with an ABF and heavier box etc, so it makes the load even worse. Also, the real load is almost all on that one bracket, its the side of the rack that limits any sideways movement, the other side is free to move through the bush. Maybe the other bracket is stronger for the original LHD configuration. Anyway, a worthwhile area to check and definitely strengthen if you already have the motor out or at least have the downpipe removed.
Yep, my mount on the Cabby broke off completely recently...
Still got me home though...

Being the tight arse that I am, I decided to build a replacement roof securing handle...
A few scraps of metal, a drill/grinder/welder, and some paint, and now I have this...
Apart from the average welding, it looks great, and works even better...

I looked up your thread and see what you mean by coming right off, I have never seen one come right off! That really would have been a stressful drive. Mine was only just moving around a little and only in the bottom half. But still it really feels sharper now that the very small amount of movement is gone.
And here is my recent mod, new turbo oil drain location on the ABF, this time above oil level. Not an easy location to drill through 7mm of cast iron with engine still in car.
Found an easy way to get rid of dash creaks - jam a cut-off rubber doorstop in the gap between the underside of the dash and the structural panel just beneath. Works great, takes all the weight off the middle area of the dash. Now I can hear other creaks I couldn't previously hear..
Fitted an Inline Cigarette Socket so I could charge my phone...
Apparently they are optional extras and mine didn't come with one...
Oh, and then drove it to Wollongong and back...
Didn't miss a beat, and 8L/100km on the highway...

Replaced an inner CV boot that had melted at the recent VW Supersrpint (and spat grease over the back of the block and onto the dump pipe). It really is one of the most unpleasant jobs on the car, there is just no way to do it without ending up covered in grease. It didn’t help that the CV was on the spline really tight, and as I was knocking it off it decided to spit out a couple of balls, arghh..
Anyway, done, and I have made a heat shield to prevent it from happening again. I have about 4-5 heat shields in various places now.
Replaced brake booster, master cylinder, discs, calipers, pads and drums, along with a full brake fluid flush and bleed. Then new wheels and tyres to finish it off. Boo yeah! Now the damn thing won't idle haha
So I picked up my '76 LS two days ago, drove away and the car died within 5 minutes.. I was very upset HOWEVER, it turns out that the previous owner had just cleaned the spark plugs and one was loose -.- so after he came to my rescue with a new set of spark plugs, we popped them in and re-adjusted the timing (it was WAY out).
If this had been my daily, and not the fun weekend car, I'd of been furious... but because it's a car that I expect to break down and enjoy popping the bonnet whenever possible, it was actually very fun to learn how to adjust the timing...
This truly is the best car to own for an enthusiast
Having a car you just bought break down, expecially down the road sucks! Id feel so bad as a seller and that happening. Anyway, and LS hey? Give us some pictures already! Unless you already have started a thread
