  • Exhaust pressure sensor (the one to do with the DPF)

    Hey everyone,
A friend of mine has a MK 1 facelift Touareg V6 TDI with DPF. About a week ago the engine warning light came on, the car entered limp mode and so they called the dealer and drove it there straight away. After half a day the car was back, VW apparently saying that there is a Campaign on an 'Exhaust gas pressure sensor relating to the DPF'. also when the car got back there was one of those recall plates behind the drivers door. I looked under the bonnet and the only part that wasn't dusty (and so was brand new) was the pressure sensor that tells the car how full the DPF is and when it needs regenerating (you know, that little rectangular box with two hoses and a wire coming out of it). Does anyone here know if the sensor in this car is the same as the one on my Polo? (Check my signature)
If it is, do you think that the Campaign would also affect my car? Because I've been having regen's way too often and the way it does them is horrendous - stalling at intersections, being way too noisy, shaking etc.

    Thank you for any info/help!

Probably the same part number fitted to the Touareg now, as you have on the Polo.

How do you know it's doing regens too often? You can only guess without checking with VCDS. You need to diagnose before placing blame.

Even if it's doing regens, it shouldn't stall. Boost gets raised and there's extra fuel, not less.

You know when it's happening Gav, it's far from "hidden", the car becomes jerky and a bit of a bitch to drive. The exhuast note and induction noise goes up noticably as well, the car is dumping fuel late in the stroke to explode in the DPF! Further, the intake flap closes off the airflow considerably to raise temps, and that makes it far easier to stall. I hate when the car is doing a regen, even now when I can control every facet of it.

I'd very much suggest you have the same problematic DPF sensor, but it was revised about 2010, so it's odd a polo fitted with a DPF would have an old part....I have both on hand so put up a picture of the label on yours and we can work it out.

All that said, when my original "old" one died, and I bought a new, revised model one before VW started admitting to a problem ( typical ) my regens started happening more frequently. I must say I've never been happy with the "new" version, and feel they just dropped the threshold so it regens more often that not in a bid to stop DPF's clogging prematurely. I never managed to adapt it back to anywhere near how the old one worked.

I wasn't querying that it was doing regen's just whether it was too often. So you would need to check the DPF to know if it was full enough to require it.

They are less than $100, (the one I bought for DKN was) VW shouldn't have any old ones on the shelf any more.

059 906 051C is the number I have in ETKA. Although mine is nearly a year out of date now.

          Unlikely to affect your Polo.

Even if it were the same part, your car would have the current version of the part anyway.

As always, your dealership can tell you if there are any campaigns outstanding on your car.

Thanks everyone for voicing your opinions. Greg, I will get a picture of it in a few minutes...
Gavin, I understand that I am only guessing that its regenerating too often, but dont you think regenerating twice a week is a bit much, no matter how you drive? We do a mixture of short and long journeys and about 30,000 kms a year.

            Thanks again,
            Alex.

              Greg:

I also believe that friend's Touareg is one of the last old ones and I think it was delivered in 2010, the same year my polo was so I still think it could affect it. I will however call the dealer tomorrow.

                  Thanks jazd,
In the link you provided the part does look slightly different to mine, but the one that was replaced on my friend's Touareg looks identical to the one on my car. I will have a closer look at the Touareg's one to see if it has the same number as mine, if it does I suppose it could mean that the part on my car is faulty.

                  Thanks,
                  Alex.

Alex you have a totally different part number to the Golf's. Plus the new one I had to buy yesterday is made in bloody Malaysia, at least you have a German part - even if it is "far south" Germany......$108.08 full strength, $88 trade, $78 cost price from looking over the guys shoulder yesterday, and I had to cough up full price!

Geez, that price makes me cringe for such a small component, even if its job is important! Well, yes I do prefer German made things but if the Malaysian part works better than the German part, well I'd prefer the Malaysian one

It does control the lifespan of a $3000 part - the flippin DPF!

I'm on my third one, so $200 down now....but I *did* break the last one...

Well I suppose it's price is justified then. But still...

Exhaust pressure sensor (the one to do with the DPF)

Ok, so thanks again to everyone's help with my possible problem. Below are two photos, the first one is the new sensor fitted to my friend's Touareg and the second photo is the sensor of my polo. They both have different numbers. Ideas?

(The last digit on the second photo is '3' if you can't see it)

That's the Bosch part number, not the VAG part number.
