Gigitt and gldgti, thank you both!
I have sussed high-beam, and as a city dweller, before it was needed by me but probably just in time for others.
It seems that I was simply not pulling hard enough on the indicator stalk, probably worried about breaking it, and now I have both flash and full high-beam and even an indicator light on the dash, (I had wondered why it was always lit and thought it a dash lighting light). Great progress for simple minds.
On the fogs switch, mine only seems to pull out one click, and yes, I did try pulling harder. Interesting how different these cars are, one from the other. I presume that means I wont have a reverse fog, but thanks for the info, I will also look into this.
Anyone know a reliable auto electrician to let loose on a Golf cruise control?

With the Fogs... Front Fog lights were not standard, but optional.
Mine did not come on my car when I bought it... I bought them soon after and they connected right into the factory wiring harness at the radiator
The front fogs are projector based and fit into the bumper next to where the blinkers are.
Also your standard headlight switch will be only rear fog capable... so 1 click out and rears turn on - and no option for turning on front fogs.
You have to buy a euro headlight switch which will come with Front and Rear fog option... just next to the headlight dial you will the Pics and LED status lights for the front/rear fogs. 1 pic and 1 red led means only Rear Fog. 2 Pics and 2 LEDs are Green for front and red for rear fogs.

OK Cruise control is just the Left stalk and 4 wires going to a connector under the dash - how do I know - I addd cruise control 1st by hooking up 2 switches to the connector (1x On/Off switch and 1x 2 way MON-OFF-MON (momentary O) for the SET and RES) I have a Bently Manual and can read wiring diagrams. then I bought the stalk later on off eBay Germany
The Cruise Control in Mk3 TDI is electric and DBW - Drive By Wire directly controlled by the ECU.
In Mk3 Pertol cars CC is not simple and cannot be converted for TDI's.

Just a side note - I have Manual TDI so there is also 2 extra switches used for Cruise to work - 1 for Brake and 1 for Clutch pedals... these are Extra Switches meaning that my brake and clutch have 2 switches each installed even though I did not have CC Factory fitted there were already there. If you do not have the 2nd switches on you Brake and Clutch (or just your Brake for Auto) then the CC will not work. These swtiches disable the CC if you brake or press the clutch in.

So if you are trying to test Cruise control you have to Turn it on, then be driving over 30km/hr to SET the speed you are currently travelling.
Your SET speed is remebered if CC is canceled by brake or clutch - then you can use RES (Resume) to go back to that speed - like if you are comming up behind a car or rolling too fast down a hill and you hit the brake to slow down or clutch to change gears.
Turning OFF the Ignition clears the Set Speed and I also Think so does turning OFF the CC on the Stalk.

My brain is full! Thanks everyone again.
Will see what I can do here.
I have no front fog lights as far as I can see.
Looking for a Bently manual may be a good start.

            Ah a wiper stalk issue.
I couldn't find this in the Mk3 thread, possibly due to my poor searching ability.
(And rather than embarrass the entire VWW forum, I thought I would post here
I have found in the recent rain that I can activate the rear wiper and control regular or intermittent and even the washer, but cant turn it off.

Well, that's not quite true, if I turn the ignition off and restart from intermittent, the rear wiper will stop from intermittent.

Don't use the rear wiper much, so wasn't that worried, but I am loaning the car to a friend's son for his driving test on Thursday, and he may be asked to demonstrate his knowledge of the wiper controls.

Any wisdom would be greatly appreciated.

OK, I found this info about rear wiper on-off switching on a UK website,
GolfGTIforum.co.uk - An independent forum for Volkswagen Golf GTI enthusiasts.

so it looks like a wiring issue. When they say tap it, not sure in which direction.
I think I tried them all, o well hose and a few experiments, shall see.
              Cheers,

                from memory

1 Click up is Intermittent mode (Up = anti clockwise)
2 click up is standard front wiper speed
3 click up is Fast front wiper Speed
Push towards front of car for Rear wiper control (On/OFF/Water)
Pull towards steering wheel for Front Wiper Water

The intermittent front wiper function is TIME dependent.
That is 1 click up to turn on INTERMITTENT WIPER. Default is ~4 seconds between wipes.
If you want it to wipe at a faster rate, turn it off - count for the number of seconds you want it to be off then 1 click up to turn it back on.
You have to do this between wipes - ie not when wiper is half way through a wipe. if you turn it off 1/2 way it cancels the timing.

So to Change the INTERMITTENT TIMING....
1 click up to turn on INTERMITTENT Wipe, then 1 Click down after 1st full wipe, then count 1001 1002
then 1 click up to INTERMITTENT Wipe and now your wipers INTERMITTENT setting is now 2 seconds between wipes.

You can set the INTERMITTENT wipes upto 10 sec. after 10 sec wait the timer returns to default ~4 seconds.
To Cancel INTERMITTENT Wipes you turn off for longer than 10 sec or use Normal or Fast wiper mode, or set INTERMITTENT Wipe to another Speed.

For the REAR wiper you turn on by push lever towards the front of car (momentary ON) then push again to turn off. Push and Hold for rear wiper and water.

                  Thanks Gigitt,
All good. The rear wiper turns on (auto intermittent) with a brief push towards the front of the car.
To turn the rear wiper off, once its in intermittent phase, it requires another tap in the same direction, but this has to be done during the wipe phase.
If you push down between wipes, it just re- wipes instantaneously.

The front wipers work as you say, with the exception that, on my car, the intermittent on is a down motion, towards driver's right knee, and the constant wipe functions are up towards the windscreen.
All good for the test, even gave it a (brief) tub.

                  Thanks again,

New issue: Got the car back from a service at local garage and thought the driver's door lock was a bit loose.
Today, when I went to drive the teen to a work experience thing in the rain, I found it wont open at all, and that was the one door lock that worked.
I think they probably turned the lock a bit hard and broke the pin or whatever goes when this happens. The key now free turn 180 degrees either direction...

                    Question is, what to do?
I can only see a broken window and major repair bill in the future

Any suggestions would be gratefully received at this stage.

And, of course, its in a two hour daytime zone, and at the mercy of council parking officers.

been there done that - but not on my Mk3 TDI - mine is Bullet Proof

I have done 3 door locks on 1998 6N Polo's... the internal key barrel once the correct key is inserted unlocks and it can rotate. The Barrel has some pins at the back that are pushed against some springs that allow it to return back to center. These pins also engage the main housing and allow the door to 1) on a half turn to electronically un/lock when it touches the electronic switch by turning on the central locking pump. 2) if you keep turning further then the pins engage the mechanical lock an you can manuall un/lock the doors (eg when no battery conneted)

So these pins break at the end of the barrel.
if one of the pins breaks then you can only either open or close depending on what pin is still intact.

So basically you have to buy another door lock. Wreckers only sold me the whole handle and lock together.
You pull the handle apart and just replace the broken barrel pin part.
You slide you key into the lock to take the barrel off and put your lock into the good barrel.

Now I'm going by memory as I did thes about few years ago.
When I talk about 'barrel' it might be just the rear part that breaks not the barrel itself - i can't remember.
I do know that you should take the broken handle off the car and take it with you to the wreckers... the Polo's came with 2 types of barrel pin mechanisms and they are not interchangeable - but the rest of the handles parts are - pretty screwy!
Also with the polo's it did not matter which side of the car handle you buy - just make sure the pins mechanism is the same.

Now I think the Mk3 Golf door locks are similar internal working to the Polo's. Just the keys were different. Polo's had similar internal worm cut squigles as like current keys. My Mk3 Golf keys are edge hill and valley cut.

I think I took pics but don't know where they are - sorry.

Oh - forgot you need emergency car access... sorry you open the boot to open the rear doors so you can open the fronts using the Pull Up Door pins.

Now this will kind os suck if you do not have the plastic door pins and only the threaded wire and the threads go pretty low into the door.

Oh... I have a remote car alarm on mine so using the keys is very sledom.

                          Gigitt,
Yeah, thanks for both those posts.

Eventually, in the rain, we got in through the boot after the RACQ guy prised the drivers door and jiggled the door button, which is a plastic stalk type thankfully. It didnt open the door, but for some reason, the boot opened.
It could be my error, but before that, I thought I was locked out of the boot too.

And having struggled into the front seat, not as flexible as I used to be, I found the door locked and any attempt to open the door was repelled by the vacuum system, so NASCAR through the window, which is the Armstrong manual winder-type. However, on starting the car, all the doors have unlocked and now wont re-lock.

I have ordered both replacement lock eccentrics and a replacement barrel kit. If not the drivers' door, the passenger door will need a new kit, will see. And am buying a Bentleys.

I also got a Torx set so I can remove the door handle. In other threads, they are Allen keys, but not mine.

Thanks again, fingers crossed it will be OK over the weekend, and I don't drop anything vital where I cant retrieve it.

if you have the plastic door pins, you should still have been able to open the doors... well maybe... Mk3 are supposed to have a nice feature of deadlocks when using the keys

you can test this by having the window down and locking the car then testing the door pin 10 minutes later to see it will unlock the door.

I don't know if you will find any of this in the Bentley manual except taking the door handle off the car.
I have a Bentley and did not use it to help me pull the handle apart to fix the barrel thingy with the Polo's.

I'm mechanically minded so it was not hard to figure out what was wrong and how to fix it.

If you have any issues, take pics and post them up. I probably can still walk you though the fix.

if the button does not want o stay down cause the central locking keeps activating and opening the doors, then sounds like a broken piece of the key/lock mechanism is jamming the electric switch and it gets activated thinking you wanted to open the door.
