EGR should we all be more concerned

  • I realise that the GT was never introduced to the US, I just thought that if Malone had normal tunes for them regardless maybe there was enough international demand for them to make a dynamic EGR tune for the GT as well - but you're probably right, it's a long shot.

    As for the DPF I'm aware of hi flow DPFs and gutting the stock DPF which became more popular options since I deleted mine, but I went through a lot of trouble to obtain a tune with minimum soot and as it is with Custom Code I can report zero smoke under normal load, light smoke under heavier (perhaps 2/3) load and a brief moment of heavy smoke only when you hammer it to WOT, which I believe is no different with the 103 TDI without a DPF. I've been on the tail end of those dirty old diesels quite often since I routinely drive through industrial districts, so believe me I like making people breathe in soot about as much as I like breathing it in myself, but for what it's worth I do consider what I have currently as acceptable.

    Back to the topic (somewhat), since I already have a tune anyway I myself am unlikely to go down the dynamic EGR tune route, which makes my most viable option a provent since I'm not nearly a serious enough tinkerer to block off the EGR - hope you can have that kit figured out soon! I already have an APR intake so I'm just waiting for the word (and some cash...)

    • Well that's nice to hear, sorry if I was abrupt, but I agree no one likes following a belching diesel, and that fact alone prevents me from going the full removal. Gutting the DPF would be just as bad really, which is why I think partial flow is the best compromise, and whilst it will still soot a bit, it is supposedly at least 50% as good as a 90% OEM DPF. You can also dial in more % removal in the partial flow by increasing the surface area. I'm keen to try and make this work, and balance soot with flow, enough to turn off the regens with the CCode delete tune, but with a form of DPF still in place.

      Believe me I've been on both sides of that fence, having bought one of the 3 first Miltek delete pipes to hit Australia, but I have to take note of Gale Banks example that you can indeed build power without soot. Dropping the EGR will only decrease the soot, as too will keeping that inlet air as cool as possible.

      I'm quite confident a plate with a small 10mm hole drilled in it, coupled with an O2 sensor spacer would probably not throw a dash cell, yet reduce the EGR dramatically. Whilst my TDI does take longer to warm up, if you drive it normally it's not that much longer, and I'd swap the potential for higher cylinder wear ( already very low in diesels ) with no gunk at all going through my engine, and less soot production. With a tune you would have to watch EGT's very closely, as reducing EGR theoretically raises them.

          • Just got the 'Emissions Workshop' warning light come on in my golf. ive read a few different posts on google and cant narrow the problem down. some say a manifold flap replacement, others say the filter needs replacing etc. 1 trip before the light came on (same day) i noticed a cigarette smell in my car that ive never noticed before.. could that have been the start of it? it went away after about 10mins but seemed odd.. - this was friday night. i have only driven it 15km sunday and then another 10km this morning(monday) to work.. i noticed this morning for the first time some smoke out the back of the car when i turned it on this morning.. i understand that its a diesel..but yeah.. never noticed before.. ?? got it booked in for a scan on monday :/ - should i stop driving it till then? use the mrs' car?

            • My best guess is the manifold flap is gummed up, I assume the car has a higher milage? At least you have no DPF to further compound issues!

              • 95000k. regular services since new according to the log book. all things replaced when recommended in the logbook. ive only had it 2 months.

                  Yup!

                  Its a fairly common issue, having the EGR clog up. Plenty of reading in the forum to help you prevent it happenning again.

                  • I've just spent the most of a cold, wet afternoon inside (best place to be!) reading through this thread. VERY interesting and even more interesting to me as having just got over (I think I have, anyway...) the DSG lag thing - see "DSG,is it that good?" I'm now told I have to bring the T5 in to have the EGR changed out (why, I haven't as yet established, but certainly will be asking).
                    Will get back when I can provide more info. This, after a mere 17,000 km too. Thanks to all the contributors to the EGR thread.

                        Yes - as I stated, it's for the EGR, but do you have any idea what the recall's about ... ie why it is necessary?

                          Well, here I am answering(?) my own post.
                          The best I could get out of the collar & tie on the front desk is that the EGR valve spindle (or whatever its real title is) tends to stick.
                          Not good.
                          I asked - "will the replacement unit do the same?"

                          ...Of course not, sir.

                          • Of course it will, when it gets older (used). Cleaning the t/b as a part of your 30,000km service should prevent that. Do nothing and you will have one expensive part to replace down the track.

                              Well what is confusing here for me is that this work (whatever it really was) was carried out within 2000km's of the vehicle's first (15,000k) service.
                              If the "cleaning" is a regular requirement then it should have been done at 15k.
                              And how long does cleaning an EGR take anyway ... they had the car for a day and a half. At least I got a loan car (even if it was a crappy well-used Caddy).

                              • Update. Clouds of black smoke under hard takeoffs again. Only about about 20000ks since all was cleaned. Has had a restrictor in EGR cooler intake flange with a 10mm hole in it. Took it out yesterday and put in one with a 5.5mm hole. No fault code came up, so probably should have experimented a bit last time. I guess I will still have to make some some time to clean things up again and check the EGR valve is not leaking or jamming. Bloody thing.
