with the paint, it depends on where and who is painting it.

if you can afford it, get it done properly in 2 pak, or if you're doing the budget thing, acrylic is great for garage/back yard jobs. with enough time and effort acrylic can look just as good as 2 pak jobs. 2 pak isn't so safe for home use though.

And don't forget the most important thing for a MK1 rebuild, the body-cavity sealing! Mike Sanders is the best you can buy here, but I don't know if this is available down there.

I'm just starting to gear up to get this project going - there's
fine weather , I need to get it done , I have time.......
then work wants me.
Now I have to work all weekend.

Glenn, go with the 2 pac, way more durable paint than Acrylic even though more expensive. make sure the bodywork around the windows , top of front guards, sills and rear axle points are rot free before you hit it with the paint.

Have a read in here, there once was pics of suspect rust areas but that changed with the new rocco forum.

I would clean out all the inner sections of the doors, sills, body cavities and get some body wax injected while your doing the bodywork.

yea if you do spray 2pak, i'd hire a booth and full safety gear, that way the conditions are much more ideal and consistant for spraying 2pak (temp humidity etc) and safe

You will need to be extremely careful, Isocyanates are accumalitive material, once you have a reaction to exposure it is likely they will always be a continuing problem.

WORKSAFE Victoria has released a safety alert for woodworkers warning of the risk to health from spraying furniture with two-pack polyurethane paints and lacquers containing isocyanates.
According to the safety alert, spraying generates a mist that may be inhaled and cause respiratory sensitisation and occupational asthma. Exposure to trace amounts of isocyanates can then trigger these symptoms once a person is sensitised, which means the person can no longer work with isocyanates.
Organic solvents and thinners used to clean spray guns can also affect the central nervous system and various organs and can cause dermatitis.
The risk can be eliminated or reduced by referring to the material safety data sheets for guidance on suitable controls, or using paints and lacquers that do not contain isocyanates.
Other measures include using downdraft or side-draft spray booths to vent the fumes outside, locating open faced spray booths away from cross drafts, using an airless or high volume low pressure spray technique to minimise overspray, and using an airline respirator.
Items should be placed on a turntable in an open faced booth, so the operator can rotate the items and direct the spray towards the extraction point. Freshly sprayed items should be kept in the booth until they are touch dry.
Spray booth, respirator and airlines should be maintained regularly to ensure air quality, and there should be control of ignition sources in areas where flammable solvents are used or stored and within two metres of open faced booth "
