Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Received these today - fitting on Friday. Thanks Kevin for a seamless transaction, and for relieving the weight of my wallet.

Now you need to decide how low you want to go......whilst maintaining driveability, handling and of course aesthetics.

          • Time to prepare for a set of new shoes before Xmas...I have been considering following 2 available setups:

            Rims:
            19x9, ET30
            19x8.5, ET32

            Tyres:
            245/35/19 or 255/30/19 (Front)
            255/30/19 or 265/30/19 (Rear)

Ideally prefer the the wheel + tyre align with the arches perfectly if possible. I am inclined with 19x9 ET30 option so can fit wider rubber if need to, but will it be too aggressive? Need some advice please! I know many of you probably have done heaps of research before buy yours.

            • 30 or 32 may be too much

go 35 offset with a 9 or 9.5" width and you can fit 265 all round.
              will fill the guards perfectly

              • Thanks John. It has been a while. Hope you enjoy building your new house

I guess the 9 + ET30 combination is close to 9.5 + ET 35 on how it fits on the guards, but 9.5 has less clearance for BBK. But I could be wrong. I am more thinking to fit 255 rubber average, 265 may be too much traction for me , 255 is probably less likely of rubbing with no negative camber. But 265 can run on 9 as well though not recommended I guess.

My front are 8.5 + ET26 and my BBK fits (just) though I have dish. I'm running 255 on them

                  • Thanks Bec, I may go with 19x9 ET30 then, it would probably sit similar like yours with a bit further out (~3mm), but will have to check the BBK fitment if it only fits just on yours, may be a problem for me, as mine will has less clearance. Are you running the Brembo 6 piston GT? Nice BBK by the way.

                      • Cool! Do you have the part number if you don't mind? I have been considering Brembo 6 piston too with their Type 3 rotors. I know they made a kit specifically for the R.

                        • You will find that 255 rubber is a good size.. while it plays a little with your speedo.. I would go with 255x35 in the Michelin Pilot Supersports... best tyre out there... IMO anyway.
I am running 265x30x19 on the rear of mine on 10 inch rims with an approx ET of 39 (52 on the rim and 13mm spacer) and I have no clearance issues... but the shallow sidewall makes it look like it isnt lowered... my fronts are 245x35x19 on 30ET (55 wheel with 25mm spacers) and again... no clearance issues... next set will be 255x35 fronts and 265x35 rears..... that is a long way off though.

Clearance for the BBK will be down to the wheel as well as the ET. With Brembo you can download a cutout template to check if they fit... generally.
If you are going with a higher spec wheel... BBS etc you should be able to get the internal clearances etc so you can make sure it all fits... neither the wheels or the BBK are cheap... so you want to be sure.

                          • Thanks Andy as always you have been very helpful with heaps of info. I would probably only do wheels and rubbers and get the BBK to fit it afterwards once I am absolutely sure.

I really need better tyres so will change rims too. I eventually end up deciding the OZ Racing Ultraleggera HLT which was my first preference, have been looking at Rays G25 and ADV10 which are forged, but ADV and HRE are just too much for me at the moment, don't need very precise customisation, so will pick something off the shelf. BBS are really good wheels, but the ET is a problem for aggressive looking without a spacer.

On the tyres, I am thinking 255 x 30, Michelin doesn't do this in Australia, but can source them from overseas, do you think the 30 will give more and obvious road noise than the 35? Now I just need to work out whether to run the same spec all around, or 255 front and 265 rear...As you say not cheap upgrade so want to get things right in the beginning. I know lots of RWD runs fatter tyres at rear, but not sure if it is necessary for FWD.

                            • i am running 255/30 all round and road noise isnt any worse then the 35 series that come stock, but ride is a bit harder.
