  • Door pod inprogress

Exams just finished and jumped into my door pod build. Not to worry... it wouldn't not be a FULLY sick build, I will keep it as OEM and as functionaly as possible.

I have been thinking about my mid range in kick position for VERY long time but after few hours of playing, I found mid in kick didn;t have a "warm" feeling, so I decided I am going to mount the 4" angled along with 6.5" slightly angled in OEM positon.

Hopefully this pod will give a more stable mounting and air tight fitting for extra mid bass.

Only just the begining, I still need to re-enforce fibreglass, make the skeleton and play with best angle for optimum SQ.

More to come tomorrow, enough for today.

Should I MDF the 6.5" on the door frame and tunnel the speaker out or should I mount the 6.5" on the pod itself. My worry is insuffeicent air in door pod. Is there such a thing ?

      Nice work there mate

Ive been looking into making door pods for my front aswell, just the 6.5" midrange, wanna bring it out a tad and give it some more room plus change the appearance of the stock lower trim. I bought some already made door pods, but soon found they wouldnt fit with the door closed Could modify them to fit, but alas, I cant be assed atm and have just re-covered the trim anyway!

Look forward to the updates, looks interesting

So when do you finish your exams/ assignments Ray. We shall continue our good old holiday DIYs once again.

Lorenz You know what you can do... With out spoiling your retrim too much, and do a simple pod.
soemthing like this ( this dude used a 8" woofer and massive angle, looks ugly but should sound awesome. )

with 2 MDF rings on a V shape and use the fibreglass I gave you, that should plenty.

Next Wednesday, dammit. But I've got lots of things to keep me occupied with my car until next Semester starts Can't wait to get Uni work over and done with.

I've seen a few setups where the speakers were placed in the footwell - how's that for optimum sound travel in the car?

Totally know how you feel... I am excited for you.

Not sure about foot well. but thats a very odd position, I have only seen fullysick set ups with 10" subs on foot well.

Louis, I remember all those pictures you showed me of those fiberglass projects when we were finishing my car. I'd love to have just the time to do that stuff, let alone the skill! Lovely work, as always, can't wait to see the finished product!

By the way I am thinking of revamping my sub box and making a corner-mounted sealed enclosure for better space and better sound, i'll talk to you about it if i get some time haha

So I spent a good half of the day moulding the other left door and cut up some MDF for the skeleton.

I am happy that it I still have plenty of space to play with once in the car, tomorrow I will have stablise the whole structure, hopefully glass everything all together properly.

One thing I didn't think of. Does anyone know if I should have the speakers in seperate compartments or is it ok to just use one, ie nothing separating the 2? I know in the case of sub boxes it's always separating the 2 subs.

you will need to have the 4" driver seperate from the 6

the 4" will not need much of an enclosure, but just make sure that they are seperate from eachother

looking tops mate, cant wait for my uni exams to be over either, as possibly, perhaps, mabe some of my stuff may get a home in the golf, fingers crossed

Ideally yeah you would want them in there own enclosures. But realistically the 6" does not produce all that much pressure that you would be able to get away with running them both in one enclosure.

I would also recommend the original divider in the door pocket build the enclosure up to there. Also make another mould from the rear side of the door pockets you have created, It will be way smoother and require far less sanding and prep work etc.

                      Hope this helps.

tatally understand what you mean, That was my initail plan too, but I thought I needed a frame for stability So I decided to make a floor With MDF and attach it to the frame. Little more woodwork and glassing but it's working out OK.
Thanks for the heads up tho.

fi you make the the whole thing from Fibreglass you will not need to do any wood or anything else for that matter, as the fibrglass is pretty strong.

this is my test for box strength, once built i'll stand on it or jump on it if it does not crack or break it has passed my stress test. If not then i redo.

I admire your courage to do that Glidn. I Think I will stick with hoping it wouldn't break. I would hate to start all over again.

Today I purchased a new blade for my jigsaw, it's amazing how a correct blade makes a hell of a difference.

I joined the pocket and the door mould with silion and glassed over for air tightness, Turned out to be a pretty messy and time consuming job, couldn't even pick up camera to take photos. These cold weather workes against my favour, took almost 6 hours to tack dry compaired to drying in direct although cool Sunlight less than an hour to completely dry.

Finially my $5 bunnings Hot glue gun finially went out of service after 6 months of hard work. Should have kept the receipt, it is still under warranty.

Made some more progess today. Finished my one piece grill, the joint will be clayed over and the grill will be wriped with black ladies stocking.

To get the angle right on the other door pod I used the grill as a templet before hot glueing it down. It worked perfectly well.
                              material.

I got some fleece from lincraft for 4 bucks to strech in the shape of the other door pod, it worked much better than T shirt cotton materials. As resin on fleese driedm, it is much more sold making it easier to work glass with. On the other hand cotton is much more thinner and porous, basically wasted lots of my resin.

Now I am waiting for the fibre glass to dry, then it will be ready for the filler stage.
