I agree, I'm going to attempt to reinstall an earlier (more appropriate) firmware version, fingers crossed.

FYI - it's better/safer to install the firmware out of the vehicle, though it probably isn't possible for you to do this without the right equipment.

? I think it may have something to do with heat dissipation and not being connected to the Gateway ? (~10% into the Gateway step is the point where many upgrades become b0rked)

It's definitely a C, says so on the label in top of the unit.

I'm downloading more software as I write.

        I'll give it a go.
Did you get the unit with the car? or did you buy from overseas?

I have bought 3 from overseas so far,no issues, however 1 said "C" on the label and in the info screen, but a VCDS scan said "B" ......

I can do work if you want. If you are based in SE qld though, Liquidforce would be more convenient than posting. If you want things outside their scope I am happy to do it but ensure that it is insured and tracked for posting. PM if you are happy with this. If you want a personalised PIN, VIM, region free etc let me know Cheers Greg

            Hi Sharkie,

The unit is an Aussie version (you know what I mean). And the system info screen reflects the "C" on the label.

Is there a way to completely wipe the RNS and start from square one?

Despite what the sticker may reveal, despite what the hidden menu displays, the ONLY true way to determine what version/model a unit is, is to run a VCDS scan.

Firmware upgrades completed previously will mask the true identity of a unit thru the two visual inspection formats I mentioned. However, these upgrades won't change the identity of the unit within the VCDS scan result.

That error is a media read error.
You need to burn the firmware image onto another disc and try again.
Preferably use another brand of media, a desktop CD burner rather than a laptop, and use imgburn at slowest speed to burn it.
There is likely nothing wrong with your unit, just a bad image on the disc.
If it fails again with the same error try putting a CD lens cleaner in first in case the laser is dusty.

Nice catch.. I can't believe I missed the error in that photo (sorry OP).

I also had this happen a few times in the process of a failed upgrade attempt. Tried burning several CDs, but was only able to get past the error after burning the image to a DVD at low speed.

Advise much appreciated, but that doesn't explain why the installs fail on four different install discs at the same point.

Yes it does. Either the image is bad or the burn is bad. Get another copy of the iso and burn on different media eg DVD-r.

Well I tried cleaning the laser lens, and the unit still stops at 29% of the install (5% through installing APPL).

It happens on all three install firmware versions I have. I've tried different brands of discs and both DVD and CD-R media but no joy.

As it happens it's the same result with a genuine VW firmware install disc.

Strangely the unit still function, radio works, DVD works, nav works (although no spoken directions are heard, the nav volume fader is not even available to be adjusted).
Bluetooth audio streaming works (although no artist and song data is displayed just the words "Bluetooth Audio"), and handsfree telephone also works.

                            Very strange.

Sounds like there may be an issue with the NAND flash on the board that is not able to be written to successfully.
The only way to validate that theory though is to plug in to the diag port on the back of the unit and get the logging output as the firmware loads with the unit on the bench.
