Its plausible in so far as the feature may be able to be locked out via coding...
But to function, it would need to be unlocked, plus the map data would require the TMC decryption key to be already installed.
Would be happy to take a look at any member's MkVII that has v7 map data to confirm this...anyone in Sydney?

Is it usual for the new maps to be shipping in cars before the disks are on sale to the public?

Given the Mk7's use the SD card setup now it could be different.

this would be great though but I don't think VW would enable it for the RNS....somehow I don't see it.

Dumb question, but how do you know what version of maps are loaded?

On my Oct 13 build MY14 103kW Highline, I clicked on "system information" while in navigation mode and the following was displayed:

            Device part number: 5G0035846A
            Hardware: 040
            Software: 0421
            Navigation database: 5G0919866A 0022 ROW 2013

Are there some clues in these numbers as to which version of maps is loaded?

Hold setup down until you get Am & FM and system Version information
press that and it should give quite a few lines of info

              Including

              Hardware N40 or similar letters

              Scroll down to

              Software 4120 is latest normally

Map version info 7920 is the latest

That sounds like the new nav system in the mk7. The info is totally different to the older rns.

We know the map version we've got because we installed it
On the RNS510 you could hold the SETUP button for 30 seconds and find it in a secret menu.

You can't use the same map disc or files that are used in the RNS-510 unit that is the subject of this thread.

As far as I'm aware, you need to get map updates through a VW dealer as they're officially released, and there will be a (likely significant) charge. VW have locked the new Discover navigation systems right down, and no-one's yet found a way to get around them.

And the same goes with the Touareg's RNS 850 navigation system as the MK7's have. SD card with updates and expensive activation code from dealers only.
Rip off when you consider a portable GPS (with life time map updates) is a third of the price of a single upgrade and the maps are still 12 months plus out of date.

Hmm...the nearest I can get to this in my Golf 7 is to hold the menu button down for a few seconds and get into a service menu. From there, I'm presented with the following information:

                        Installed SW Train Version: MSTD_EU_VW_P3163

V7 Maps seem to be out... One company is charging $250 for a disc...

                            Bit steep IMO...
