Did you follow the instructions in the spreadsheet?

You have to have a fresh, blank, newly formatted SD card. Put the UPD file on it first. Then all the other files (making sure you don't overwrite the UPD file). Boot the unit. Insert the SD card into the GPS slot, you'll be prompted to update and you select yes. Once it's done it should reboot itself. You may have to press (or press and hold) the power button for it to start. It should load into a black screen with coloured text, let it do its thing. It'll then show updating MPU. Let it do its thing. Once its done, it will prompt you to restart, pull the SD card and reboot it. Itll have a white screen with arrows, press each of the arrows with your finger nail or something pointy (screen calibration) and then it should load.

I (and others) have done hundreds of firmware updates with no issues whatsoever, they seem pretty difficult to brick, dunno what you've done otherwise?

Maybe try press and holding the power button, or if that fails, press and hold both power and tuner buttons, should force it to reset.

    • I'll give that a try, Thanks.

Is the flashing light at the CD Rom slot normal?

Flashing how so? I know it flickers a bit when the unit boots, no clue if its a constant flash though.

        • It flashes constantly. Tried a fresh fat 32 formated Sdcard. Copied the Upd file, then the firmware, then the other files. Still doesn't work when i press and hold the power button. No black screen with colored text. Frustrating.

Pull the SD card out of the slot, unplug the unit for a few minutes and then plug it back in again. As I said, maybe try pressing and holding the power button, or both power and tuner dials or something.

You definitely have a DNS610, right? Should work with the firmware, and I haven't heard of anyone actually bricking their unit.

Edit: Maybe try getting in contact with audiosources, see if they can help you. At the very least they should be able to provide you with the recovery tools, unless you've seriously bricked your unit, which I don't think is even really possible. Fiona at marketing@audiosources.net is my contact.

            • If you've already flashed the MCU just try turning the car off, put the card in the GPS slot and then turn it on again. It should boot to the coloured screen then.

You could try pulling the radio fuse first too just to confirm it is reset properly.

i did take the sd card out, and unplug the whole unit for a few minutes. Tried pressing and holding the power button for a few minutes, yet still can't work. It should be a DNS610, got it from Audiosources directly.

I really hope i didn't brick it, i tried the factory reset as well, now the lights turn from red to green. I need to contact them now.

I'm really upset with this purchase..

I did, but i didn't pull the fuse, I disconnected the whole head unit though, that should be a proper reset, right?

Pulling the fuse and disconnecting the unit is the same (removes power from the unit, forces a reset). Pulling a fuse is just easier, usually, unless you already have the unit unscrewed :p

I'm sure you haven't bricked it, but I have no idea what you've actually done, as I said, heaps of us have done tonnes of reflashes on 610s and 810s, and haven't heard of a single brick.

FWIW Audiosources support can be a bit slow, they work on china time as well, so you won't get a response until tomorrow, probably.

                  • Usually holding both the power and tuner dial down does a soft reboot.

But yes, next easiest thing is identifying which fuse is running the radio and pulling that one.

The I basically just followed the instructions on the excel to flash the firmware.. It went wrong just after i hit yes to update, and thr progress bar finishes and switches the unit off. Then the lights start blinking. And the unit doesn't boot up. I then unplug it out. I tried the factory reset button, and tried reformatting the sdcard and put in the files again. Still with the flashing lights when i plug it back in. Now its blinking in green light. I've unplugged the unit amd leave it for now. Damn..

I just plug it in again, and realise that it's not just the lights at the cd rom slot is blinking, all buttons and lights are blinking!!! Wth!!!

Well actually I've bricked one. The only way I know of is to cut the power during a BSP flash. Mine froze on the BSP flash screen after the stage where it erases the Nand ready for the flash, except it never got there. Just sat there for half an hour. Eventually had to turn it off and voila... Instant door stop...

Dude, really? I had that exaccccttttt thing happen to me haha and mine was fine. Actually, I can't remember what part of it it stalled at, the part just before the creating MBR stage, it just stalled, and sat there for 20 mins not doing anything. I rebooted it, re initiated the flash and it worked fine.

But since he only flashed the MCU, which is just the software, it should be fine?

Correct me if i'm wrong, but its:

BSP (Coloured writing on black screen) = Base Level WinCE Install
MCU (prompt on insert card) = Unit Software Layer
                            MPU (White screen) = Drivers

                            Or something, right?

Edit: The only other sure fire way to brick it is if you put the car into reverse while flashing. Not sure if that still applies for the DNS, but I remember reading in the ANS thread.

Or if you try to flash DNS firmware onto a unit that actually isn't a DNS :p

Nope. Sandy replaced the whole unit for me.

You have to see the coloured text screen come up first so if you didn't have that you should be OK. Do you have another SD card you can try? I grabbed a 4gb one to use for flashing. They cost nothing and you can keep it in the car in case you ever need to do a quick reflash while you're out and about.

Yea, but I think his problem is that the unit won't even boot. Flashing the MCU, or MPU, or BSP, individually, should work fine without flashing all three at the same time.

So either the flash went wrong somehow, or the units just being stupid, I dunno.

Trying to force a BSP/MPU flash would probably be a good thing anyways.
