    • Ok so I can confirm the ANS series does not have 3G at the moment, though they have other types of units with 3G function so it's probably planned. For me though I find browsing the net on my phone enough of a chore already especially with the lame signal around Brisbane, and I have a Galaxy S3.

The GPS software on the ANS is Primo 2.0, which is the latest successor to the iGo 8.

      • Primo 2 is (as the name suggests) 2 versions above the previous generation which was known as iGo (version 8 being the last one).
Primo can use map data from either Navteq or Tomtom (that I am aware of) and can be configured to have both installed, and switch between them if required.

Lame name but awesome GPS software.

Yup, IMO they should have stuck with the iGo name. Oh well, as far as I'm concerned, it's the best GPS software out there although TomTom has some loyal fans. Regardless, it's years ahead of VW's OEM GPS software.

You'll be hard pressed to find any arguments there...I use both regularly.

            • Have been following this thread with intent. After a couple of questions answered before jumping.
              - What do the extra hard buttons on the 610, 510 do that are missing on the 810 and are they any advantage?
              - Is the unit able to read jpg files (for previewing photos from camera sd card)?
              - Anyone have any feedback of radio reception in rural areas, as this is 99% of my driving?
              - Is calculation of routes fast and accurate?
Currently have rcd 310 and Garmin 1450.
              Thanks in advance.

The two missing buttons are DIMM and MEDIA, DIMM is still there but is next to the CD slot, just adjusts the brightness level of the unit, and I'm not entirely sure if MEDIA switches to SD/USB or TV, but obviously this is still accessible through the on screen menu. It's not a big deal because the unit remembers the source you were on when turned off, and when you insert new media, be it CD / DVD / USB / SD, it will automatically switch to that source.

I'm pretty sure the unit reads JPEGs, I will test myself later.

radio reception in rural areas may be poor but I can't be certain. DAB+ is being worked on but I don't think that's been rolled out in rural areas yet either..

Route calculation is fast and accurate. As I said the Primo 2 software is excellent - it's not that well known around here from all the TomTom Garmin Navman etc, but to those who know a bit more about satnav systems it's widely regarded as one of the best.

Thanks Dkn. I notice another two buttons either side of the cd slot also. What function do these serve. If the fm reception was a definite I would be up for one after convincing the finance manager. Any feedback from other users of the unit in regards to rural reception would be apprecitated.

Are you talking about the ANS-810? Left side is brightness and right side is eject. For the 510 I think the left side arrow keys are skip tracks / change radio station etc, right side is eject and navigation audio off / on toggle. The navigation on / off toggle can be achieved on the ANS-810 by long pressing the Navi button.

                    • can the ans710 send a different video feed. OUT "say to 2 headrest monitors" and display something else on the front screen?

Sure can, there is a separate video 1+2 out behind the unit specifically for this purpose, these signals will not display satnav, so you can for example put in a DVD, turn on your satnav, and passengers behind you can still watch DVD.

                            • Hmmm. I'm glad I stumbled into this thread by accident.

The OBD II function. Is this hardware related? Will you need a new unit, or will any existing units be able to use this?

It is hardware related but it will be a plug-in module that goes in the back of the ANS, so you don't need a new unit.
