  • Hi guys I appreciate the feedback and are hearing the complaints very loud and clear.

Trust me that I did struggle long and hard about this decision and it really wasn't about the money!

In the end I've decided to do this based on two main reasons.

    1. I have since left this stable and so really any POIs developed is not so much a hobby anymore.

    2. Have since realised that some people are actually charging noobies or more the public for this free download.

So it's really a matter of principle that I should at least charge something for the time and effort.

In terms of being responsible for inaccuracies, my view is No.
What I have always offered (all these years) was a compiling/repackaging service.
I take no responsibility for any inaccuracies and never have!

But what I will do is stick to VAG service standard and only release an update either once a year or whenever another RNS510 map is released.

But if people have a problem with that then you can just not subscribe.

As for forcing people to get this installed, it's unfortunately the only way to stop it being shared after the first person pays $20.

Fair enough. As long as people know the mistakes aren't because of your hard work.

      • Does the $20 update of the POI.DB3, the one which is embedded in the maps, also include the latest v8 maps install? Traditionally you had to replace that file within the maps ISO and burn a new disk to load into the RNS..... if it includes the latest maps that would be cool... would save me the effort of having to download them from somewhere on my slow connection...

Or did you make a special CD with a custom script that just deletes and reloads the specific POI.DB3 file on the map partition on the hard disk.... well then yeah people would have to find a V8 disc somewhere first wink wink.

Now that I think about it, presumably it would be trivial to make a script which just copies the file back onto SD card... Or with a bit more effort someone could remove the SSD and extract the file... so yeah unfortunately there is no way to stop everyone getting the file after one motivated person pays the $20

        • I could be wrong, but I do not believe that the $20 payment entitles you to a copy of the media.

          • Yes I understand, but my question is whether the change of the POI.DB3 file in the internal SSD of the RNS510 necessitates re-installing the entire map - which would have the consequence that the $20 POI update service would also as a bonus update you to v8 (of course without the media)

See this post earlier in the thread (under "option 2") to see what I'm talking about:

NB: This is essentially what I do now .. the personalPOI/SD card method is pretty useless because it doesn't come up in the "search POI near me" option in the radio ... so instead you can just use the free software POIinspector to change the actual maps POI.DB3 file, and make your own map disc with *your* favourite POI. I for example only really use the Maccas, KFC and Burger King ones so I can find something when I am hungry..... I appreciate the effort that goes into compiling this huge list of POI but I've never had an on-the-fly need to find the nearest JAX quickfit tyres

But yeah for $20 you can save yourself the effort of learning how to use POIinspector and downloading a few free POI lists - and as a bonus you'll be ready for that occasion you need to unexpectedly find a nearby body shop to buy hand lotion.

I've been using aussietigs POIs in all my VW's for years and years and they really are great.

              • Re. the POI's embedded into the custom map DVDs, you should be able to repeat the same process using the same poi file (not the new one) and create your own custom V8 DVD. There was a guide for this... somewhere- I haven't looked into it yet. Don't forget you've always got Google Maps.

Why be like that? Aussietig has put in countless hours of research in the past (and hopefully) in the future, and while his efforts have benefited many VW owners in Australia, his efforts have gone on un-rewarded. This is not a simple 1hr task on his behalf, but a considerable effort to search, locate and collate the data and have it presented for the mutual benefit of all interested.

Surely a small $ cost is not unfair or a shameful way of acknowledging great work by a fellow dubber?

No not at all man, your right, Aussietig totally deserves the credit and the dollars and i would be more than happy to send him the money right now to get the file, the reality is that now we have to go to a 3rd party to have it done and thats a shame. I have created these files for myself in the past and i know the work that goes into them. It was nice to see all the good work that Aussietig put into this and made it available for our community. The downside is that now someone else will be taking some advantage of his good work and the fact that you now have to go to a physical location puts it out of reach for a lot of people. I know a lot of us here in Brisbane would have paid for the file now we have no chance. Nothing against Aussietig, his work and he can do with it as he wants, just a shame for those of us that can't get access to his good work.

                    • The process has been designed to ensure there will not be a 'free-for-all' with pirated copies of the database being flooded across the internet.

Aussietig has been involved with the implementation of this process and has explained his reasons. I concur with his decision.

Yeah and so do i, i guess what i was saying is that its a shame that people have taken advantage of his work and he has been forced to take this direction.

Correct, you just load the original map CD on your computer, and replace the POI.DB3 file with one you've edited in POIinspector (free download - comes with a PDF guide how to use), then reburn the CD using IMGburn (doesn't work with Nero for me, probably because the RNS510 excepts a joint UDF/ISO9660 filesystem or something like that).

The main drawback (for me) with this 'go somewhere for someone to pop the SD card in' is that I used to edit Aussietig's file and get rid of useless ones (IDGAF about NSW regional train stations) and add some in that I wanted that weren't in there. If it has to be installed elsewhere you are stuck with whatever someone else thought are the 'most used POI' embedded into the main map data. (Unless you build your own POI list from scratch)

But yeah I totally support aussietig getting compensated for the work that goes into this.

Lol. Fair point though - I have no problem with the $20 but it would nice be able to edit the file. I also used to modify it and add in some places more relevant to me.

Haha yeh you will get used to the fickle nature of these things: it's because the online POI lists used to make the file aren't always 100% accurate as mentioned earlier in the thread this is a collation service only...

I once drove hungry as hell for 20km to the 'nearest Hungry Jacks POI' and found nothing.... turns out it had closed down 3 years (!) earlier and replaced by apartments or something. (Just the nature of far-south-east-Melbourne being turned from farmland into sardine houses for new arrivals from the subcontinent )
