RNS-510 HDD replacement/SSD swap DIY

This is a sticky topic.

Having restored function (stuck in German lang, no sound) with old HDD and new firmware 5238, having trouble reloading to initialise for SSD swap. I read that the unit won't reload same firmware. Wondering if I enable firmware downgrade in secret menu, can I reinstall same firmware or do I physically have to downgrade or upgrade past 5238, but which version???

It's Vienna file System.
I've never heard of it outside of the rns510.
Beyond that I don't know anything more.
I'm not surprised that a Linux distro doesn't know what to do with it.

Quick question regarding the used Filesystem.Originally posted by kamold View PostThe partition type used is not one that is known by most (if not all) PC file system tools.
If you can find something that knows how to handle Vienna FS then maybe it will work.
I just excahnged my faulty HDD in my RNS 510 with an SSD. so far so good
After reinstallition of the firmware the HDD did not showed up in the menu any more.
here is my oartition table from the ssd:
Device Boot Start End Sectors Size Id Type
/dev/sdk1 * 63 29303819 29303757 14G 88 Linux plaintext
/dev/sdk2 29303820 43954469 14650650 7G c W95 FAT32 (LBA)
/dev/sdk3 43954470 58605119 14650650 7G 88 Linux plaintext
If i try to mount /dev/sdk1 to eg copy some Music " en block" to the ssd
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sdk1
When i try to use fsck I get this:
fsck /dev/sdk1
fsck from util-linux 2.29.2
e2fsck 1.44.5 (15-Dec-201
ext2fs_open2: Bad magic number in super-block
fsck.ext2: Superblock invalid, trying backup blocks...
fsck.ext2: Bad magic number in super-block while trying to open /dev/sdk1
The superblock could not be read or does not describe a valid ext2/ext3/ext4
filesystem. If the device is valid and it really contains an ext2/ext3/ext4
filesystem (and not swap or ufs or something else), then the superblock
is corrupt, and you might try running e2fsck with an alternate superblock:
e2fsck -b 8193 <device>
or
e2fsck -b 32768 <device>
Found a dos partition table in /dev/sdk1
my question is , which Filesystem is used on the two Linux plaintext partions ?
Or can i just mkfs.vfat /dev/sdk1 and it will work ?
looking forward to your answer
kind regards

Clone original disk instead of complete reinstallation
Hi,
The tutorial includes a complete reinstallation of Map+Firmware on the new SSD disk.
But does anyone have tried to clone the old nonSSD on the new SSD ? It should avoid to reinstallation step.
For exemple « easeus » utility works well for that.
Regards

Remove the 1 x T8 screw from the rear of the heatsink. Then remove the 2 x T8 screws which are down inside the heatsink. The two arrows in the picture highlight their location. This is one of the reasons behind the long reach T8 driver.
STEP 7

Remove these 3 x T8 screws from the rear of the heatsink. Then remove the 2 x T8 screws which are down inside the heatsink.
STEP 8

Drop down the rear cover plate in the same way you removed the top cover plate in Step 2. Disconnect the cable for the fan and remove the plate from the hinge.
STEP 9

- Remove the 1 x T8 as indicated.
- Carefully lift the card (red highlight) in an upward direction. The card is plugged into the upper circuit board and may resist a little. See Step 10 to see what the card sits in. Just try to lift it evenly, and also pay attention to the opposite end of the card as is needs to be guided up between 2 metal prongs. These prongs can be seen in Step 11.
STEP 10

- Remove the 3 x T8 screws from the board.
- Straighten the 2 tabs (as shown) in order to lift out the upper circuit board. Lift it out and pay attention to any places where it may catch on the existing frame. It needs to be done at a bit of an angle to clear the 4 screw tabs towards the rear of the left and right cover plates.
STEP 11

Once the upper circuit board is out of the way, you need to remove the 1 x T8 from the HDD mounting cover bracket. You can then carefully lift the HDD directly out of its plug in an upward direction.
STEP 12

Once removed, undo the 4 screws from the HDD mounting plate and replace it with your new drive. I’ve replaced this one with a 64GB 2.5” SSD IDE PATA MLC. Depending on your firmware version, this will either give you a 40GB music drive (2 partition firmware) or a 30GB music drive (with new 3 partition firmware). Remember to remove the jumper on your new SSD drive. You cannot insert the HDD with a jumper in place.

STEP 13

Reverse the procedure and you’re done. Double check all of the ribbon conenctions along the way. Plug it into your car, load your firmware+maps and check that everything is working as it should.
After it's all back together and plugged in, you'll need to install the firmware and then your maps to get the drive working.
After some recently developments by kamold, it is now possible to change the size of the partitions on the drive. For more details, visit: How to re-partition the HDD in your RNS510

Enjoy.
My support people are trying to muster the courage to tackle your upgrade. Are you available for minimal consult if they get stuck?
Tnx,
Stephen

Coding is only lost of you use a factory firmware image.
Modified firmware doesn't delete the coding.

Thanks for the answer. Must the coding be reset using Vagcom/VCDS after the operation?

Does the device ask for a code when reinserting it (into the same car)?

What firmware version did you install?Originally posted by bob76 View PostFollowed all the great advice to upgrade SSD. I also added a new power board.
only problem is that the following two problems have arisen (they weren't there before the upgrade):
1. no sound from BT module (the parrot style one that sits on dash)
2. unit switches off after 30 minutes
any advice would be extremely welcomed
thanks
What version was installed prior to the SSD install?
Why was the power block replaced?
When you say no sound from the Bluetooth module please be specific - caller's voice? Your voice? Streaming music?

I gave up... There is nothing to do, I have always the same issue when I put the SSD.
I ordered an original Hitachi HDD and i'll try again with this new one. Thanks for your help.
