  • camshaft position sensor short to ground

Hi, I have a mk7 golf R and had the engine light come on today. I took it to where I get the car service and they said the error was coming up as camshaft position sensor short to ground. Guy wasn't really sure about it and said would have to bring it back and leave it with them to look into further. Car is driving perfectly, is this likely to be something scary wrong with the car?

Don't be too concerned, cam sensors are not dear and often fail.

Mk7 R, is it not in warranty?

Yeah, I'd be willing to chance it at the dealership.

At least the diagnostic part anyway. 'Short to ground' is possibly a wiring issue.

I doubt the tune is related to a cam sensor fault.

charro: Hi. I agree with OPs. The mk7 continuously monitors all sorts of stuff (sensors, lamps, transducers, electrics, temperature, liquid levels etc). Occasionally these monitoring activities send-out intermittent faults. The usual response of dealers is to just clear the trouble code and wait until it either becomes permanent, or it persists for sufficient time to be traceable - or it just goes-away altogether. If you haven't multiple and persistent alarms/error messages on the car, then I wouldn't be too concerned.

Get the code cleared and see if it comes back.
A cam error would normally see it not start.

Car will still start with a cam fault, just takes abit longer as it goes away from being sequential ignition/injection. The only issue with warranty will be if they update the ECU, then tune will be wiped and you will get black-flagged if the tune is recognized in the process.
