Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Tyres are stock 14" size for a MK1

    Toyo Proxes R888 GG 185/60/14

Rims are 14" x 6" (et 38 I think) they're dealer optioned rims off a MK3, generic domestic wheels. The design is good for cooling and cleaning.

Running 23psi at every sort of race in every sort of condition, although I am only doing short events, pressures would have to be higher for longer events.

The car works very well with size tyre as the stock geometry is perfectly setup for it.

The car's only about 30mm lower than stock thanks to the King Springs but body roll isn't much of an issue and suspension travel lets the Koni shocks do their thing properly.

Having ground clearance helps when you clip kerbs, run off the track and loading it back on the trailer.

    • First four runs on the regular competition track layout

Minor "off" just before the last turn in this one.

This is where I boil the carbys dry.

            • From 23 psi, how much does the presure go up on the R888's after those runs?

              • You know, it's been a while since I checked...

I'll have a look at some old records and see when I get home.

                    • Thanks for the info, Pete. If/when I track mine I want to run 14s so I was very interested to see what tyre size you had.

                      • Made a heat shield today.

Racing does strange things to cars. I've lost 2 of the manifold studs on the track somewhere. The T piece for the fuel pressure gauge had undone one of the carby screws too so I had to make a little bracket to steady it.

To further alleviate any heat related issue I put a thermal sleeve over the fuel line.

                        • Made some new gaskets.

Made up a duct to get some cold air blowing towards the carbys.
