Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

I ran these on my mk1. cheap solution for a budget run around. they were a million times better then the oil filled shocks that they replaced. For everyday use they arent bad.

    • Cheers for the info - i just need them to not crash though every bump / hole / rizla paper on the road so this would be fine

      Much appreciated

      • They're fine! I ran them on the race track for the last two years.

Much better than stock oil shocks, just don't expect them to last 30 years.

Mine were a bit leaky when I pulled them out and one was definatley stuffed but I did give them a pretty hard life.

I'd use them again. Check e-bay there's always sets going cheap.

Good value for money but will have a fairly short lifespan.

        • Bugger, bit of a setback today. The clutch was slipping a bit so I just pulled the box.

The clutch rod shaft was leaking bearing and seal were loose.

I put another bearing in and discovered that the input shaft is split.

Box will now need a full teardown to repair.

Hmmm. Think I'll pop the old box back in the meantime.

            • Yeah, it sucks. Hopefully replacing the i/p shaft won't cost as much as the full rebuild.

Old box is back in now. Just finishing it up now, so around 5-6 hours to pull and replace gearbox.

Had to replace CV boot while I was under there too of course.

Old box has same ratios just no LSD. Sandown next weekend's still a go'er.

Had to pop a stock clutch disc in too the Spec plate's gonna need relining now. Double doh!

                • Yep, It'll be interesting all right. I haven't raced the motor in this configuration without an LSD.

Just took it around the block to test drve it. Controlling wheel spin is going to be a challenge.

Everything's gone back together OK. Clutch is good.

Would have been exciting if that input shaft failed in service.

                  • Great day today. Here's the lap times.

This data was captured by my Android mobile phone! The software is very cool check it out if your phone is up to it. Records all sorts of crazy stuff.

Video of all 3 sessions to come yet. I've got all the gadgets up and running now

Car went well The diff would have helped though.

Brakes are amazing although I suspect the master cylinder might be bypassing.

Now I'm getting thrown into the harness by the brakes, I could always keep my seat before.

Had a minor wiring meltdown in the second round. The factory temp sender failed to ground and took out the wiring all the way to the back of the fuse box. When I post up the video you'll actually see the cabin fill with smoke I wasn't sure if the smoke was coming from inside the car or was the result of the oil cleaning crew that had just dumped absorbent all over the track. (You'll see that too). The smoke stopped just as I cleared the oil spill so I just floored it and kept going!

Best lap time ever, an LSD would have helped even more particularly on the loose surface created by the oil absorbent.

                    Pete

                              • Last lot of video from the pit roof. The fields are getting a bit mixed up now as the groups combine.

More in car footage to come, just trying to work within You-Tubes 10 minute restriction.
