Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

    Hhaha. Only joking.

Good to hear you got it all in and fired up and going.

After exams, I'll come round for a spin. (You've got a month to practice )

Look forward to hearing how it goes.

I don't understand why more of you don't build the entire engine on the ground eg. fitting intake, exhaust manifold's etc., as this makes it soooo much easier to get it going & also saves you some stuffing around & struggling under the car.

You don't have to lie under the car trying to line up bolt's for the intake & then try & stuff around trying to fit all the extractor bolt's.

      That's just my two cent's

      Just one thought though.

I'd be cautious about posting up pick's of you smashing in the chassis rail.

This is a RWC item & is illegal to do such modification's to a structual part of the vehicle.

It may not be much, but it's just alittle head's up.
It's a very tight fit to get a 2.0 K-Jet into MK1 engine bay, I'm not sure you could actually get it in there with the inlet manifold already on.

I do it all from above, it's not hard with the right tools. Once the inlet manifold is off doing the exhaust is easy , especially extractors. The only work I do from under the car is disconnecting the CVs, which I do with a very long extension from inside the wheel arches, and the rear mount.

Thanks for the tip on the chassis rails, I hadn't considered that.

      • First drive tonight, just once 'round the block.

1st Observation - Solid mounts make you think the car is going to rattle to bits. It's been a while since I had a car with urethane mounts, I'd forgotten the joy. Once it's off idle though it's all good.

Tune is way off, I'll set the CO levels on the weekend when I can let it idle in the drive for a bit without bothering the neighbours. To get it to idle below 2000 rpm I had to wind the idle jet right in which is less than ideal.

There's plenty more torque as you'd expect and when the cam comes on song around 3500 there's a lot more push in the back than before.

As before, and I suspect the K-Jet is to balme, you need more throttle input than I'd expect to make it accelerate. You're almost on the secondary just taking off very gently.

The torque's there but you need some revs on board to get use of it. This is similar behaviour to before so I'm suspecting the K-Jet still needs sorting out. I'm going to try another solution shortly.

It is faster than before, but it's not tunnel vision "crazy fast" yet. I think there's a bit more to unlock with some more work.

Compression seems good, no sign of pinging so I can wind up the timing a bit more too.

Exhaust temps are up, could be the exhaust wrap but I've never heard the thermal contraction as the exhuast cools from down the back of the car before.

All in all it seems pretty willing.

          • Another run today, looks like I've got a cooling issue. It's getting way too hot.

Tomorrow I'll pull the (brand new) themostat out and check it out.

            Mmmmmmm.

Meanwhile bolted up new oil cooler today, the hose fittings are going to cost me more than the cooler itself! Damn those alloy AN fittings are expensive!

Bugger hey.. Can't be anything too serious. Not something simple like the thermo fan not coming on??

Yeah those fittings are pricey, i'm not looking forward to plumbing mine up!

Nope's fan's working. It seems like a circulation issue. I'm hoping for a dud thermostat rather than some 2.0 with a 1.8 head hybrid issue.

Top hose gets too hot to touch and the bottom hose stays cool. All new plumbing and radiator. Pump's OK and spinning.

Time to hit the tools and figure it out.

Locally around $50 per fitting, There's generic stuff coming out of asia for about 1/2 price via e-bay for the rice brigade. Quality unknown, although it's possible they're unbranded OEM stuff.

I'm trying to find a US source for the fiitings at the moment.

                  • Might be a false alarm on the cooling front. Pulled it all apart, thermostat pulls in OK. As I idle it up to temp I can see the recirc hose get hotter until the point where the thermostat kicks in.

Warming up the recircirc hose gets to 70° surface temp when the 80° thermostat kicks in. The top hose follows.

When the thermostat kicks in the bottom hose heats up as you'd expect.

Fan kicks in around 65° measured at the bottom hose, temp rapidly falls away.

All in all it seems to working as I'd expect.

Yesterday, the dizzy has spun in it mount, I hadn't done the clamp up tight enough. This led to retarded timing combined with a hot engine bay due to some "spirited" test runs at high rpm. I'm probably just being a bit over cautious and possibly a tad paranoid since the episode at Phillip Island.

Now on to more exciting things...

                      • What do you consider "high RPMs"? How hard will the long block rev comfortably? I mean, you'll never break anything, but i'm just wondering at what RPM the engine goes "hey, i can't breath!"

                        I'm watching.

Fitting that manifold took a lot of time, whoever designed it never actually tried to intall it.

About 6 hours of trial fits and clearancing to make it fit.

I'm sort of running out of time tonight to install the fuel pump, although I'll try to do some prep work under the back of the car.

Still got to finish making the throttle cable. (It's a modified $2.99 Huffy universal brake cable from K-Mart.)

They're Dellorto DHLAs by the way. I believe they've passed through a few hands here.

I'm going to the Group 5 sprints at Sandown on Cup Day, with some luck and a lot of work, I'll be on the track rather than beside it.
