Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • I know some of it is crap.. But there's nothing you can do about it. Just set it all up the way THEY want, get it passed, then go nuts..

Getting around the polution pump argument is going to be the tricky one.

Might be simpler to fix the easy/safety stuff and try again elsewhere.

yeh the guy was just trying to fail me i think, i'll fix the safety stuff and take it to another place, its just a pre emissions engine in a 77 with a DCOE, it looks pretty clean, looks like the pump was never there!
ARGH all gotta be done by next wednesday!

I think he expected your business thats what! He was probably hoping you were just another customer who would get sucked into spending several hundred bucks into getting the car "road-worthy".

Not once but twice! Two GLDs, two petrol motors, two RWCs!

Both cars started off life as GLDs one got a non airpump 1600 and the other got a MK 2 K-Jet 1800. One of the cars is still actually registered with the diesel motor engine number, no-one bothered to look!

                    Josh,
I've got a stock Carb and manifold you can bung on it for the RWC, might quieten it down a bit too.

I won't mention the RWC places on here but I can dig out the info if you PM me.

                    • Stock carb might help, although it shouldn't really matter, it's really not an issue of roadworthyness,.

All in all very odd indeed.

                      • If your exhaust is too loud.. Just knock up a plate to go in between one of the flanges with like a 15-20mm hole in it (or a heap of small holes..) and bash it in there.

It'll go like crap but it'll be nice and quiet..

Yeah, but it's hard to win an argument with the "expert".

I had a Kombi fail a RWC because the interior light didn't work! The expert just showed me the clause in his manual that said "all lights on the car must work". Mind you the windscreens (Yes - I've owned a few splitties) looked like they'd been cleaned with steelo pads!

If you put the stock carb and aircleaner on there and a very obvious crankcase breather into the aircleaner it goes a long way to easing their conscience on emissions "compliance"

                            Hahaha, I like that one.

You can also get the industrial packs of steel wool from bunnings and just stuff it up the exhaust pipe. It won't last long!

                            • There are several factor's everyone here need's to look at & more importantly, you all need to look at it from his perspective.

Every RWC is different, as everyone has different opinion's on what is road worthy.

I've had windscreen's that had one chip right in the corner of the screen, way out of the line of sight & it was knocked. Took it somewhere else. Passed!

It's a 30+year old car, yes. Who's head is on the chopping block? Not yours Josh. The bloke with the licence's head. Especially if it has to be sited by Vic Road's & they find a fault.
The fines & insurance cost's are enough for your parent's to sell their house & then some.

If you fit the plate in the exhaust as preeny suggested. Make sure they don't see it, as once again, the fines are HUGE. Especially by the EPA.

The carb. is a RWC. Especially if the pollution sticker under the bonnet show's what has to be hooked up & what goes where. If it show's a pollution pump, then that's what it need's.

It might also show that it need's a fresh air pulse system, as did my 77.

I had problem's with my twin dell's on my escort with a RWC, but that's another story.

76's are the only year that the mk1's that don't require pollution gear. Don't get the year's mixed up.

If the sill's are damaged, their damaged, he doesn't care who done it or how it was done. There an integral part of the vehicle's structure & as such is a RW item.

Pete, as I did when my car (in the early day's) needed RWC, we made sure as best as possible that they couldn't pick anything. If the car look's the good's or looks factory, then the engine stuff is often over looked, as with most car's. If it look's like a dog's breakfast, well you make the call.

When I see you next, we'll have a chat about it all.

                              • I'm pretty sure my car passed without a cam cover, weber DGV and a breather filter straight off the rocker cover.

Everything else under the bonnet was pretty need, save a few loose wires.

Believe it or not, the main issue i had was with the wheels and tyres! but they passed in the end (brand new rubber on mk 3 steelies. )

Also had a few small things, like rear seal, and lights, but being a 76'er, didn't have any worries with air pumps/pollution gear.
