    • Here's the PCV/breather crap removal.
      All this is gone!

      And replaced with this...

Apologies for the crud pics. iPhone camera hates the dark!
So basically the rocker cover and crank breather are now just going directly to the new catch can. It fit neatly in the housing and place of the old charcoal canister!
I had to blank off one outlet in the middle of the manifold, and run the brake booster line directly into the end of the manifold. I also blanked the hole in the intake trunk that used to inhale all the warm, oil vapoury air from the pcv/rocker cover.

Apart from that, all the stupid joins, lines, check valves, suction jet and pcv is GONE. There's about 6 fewer vacuum leaks to worry about!!!

        • For those that don't know, I took out fastest front wheel drive for the second year in a row!

The mk2 handled its business against a lightly modded 2010 Focus XR5 turbo, a bright green 2010 Focus RS, a 1998 Pulsar 2L turbo, and a seriously quick 2003 Astra SRi 2L turbo. He's actually a former vwwc member - 'lonewolf'. Over the rolling 800m we were literally side by side until i got about half a bonnet on him at the 800 line!

He obviously didn't have the legs in 5th to wind out past 208km/hr.

I managed 212km/hr on both my standing 1000m runs. I couldn't quite get the 215 like last year though.

I got chopped by a few big boys of course, but handed some out to a couple of Subaru's, a Falcon G6E, and two V8 commode's.

I don't think i'll compete next year though.

This is pretty much the only pic i've found, returning to the pit area. No one seemed to notice the FWD guys

          • Congrats - again.

Your car is still one of the biggest sleepers I've seen. Must be fun showing up much more powerful cars, especially when your "whispering death" looks like it's more suited to doing the shopping trip than the drag strip.

            Cheers

                  • Awesome work! Love your mk2 so much.

Didn't know lonewolf had modded his Astra that much (I occasionally saw updates for it on the ocau forum).

Good to hear you destroyed the RS Focus too

                    • Yep, it was a very smug inducing experience ;-P

I took it out to Barbagallo raceway thursday night for some casual lap time. Was running some used Yokohama semi-slicks which worked great.

Got about about 6 laps in and was just getting a rhythm going, picking lines, braking points, etc when the bloody thing started its misfire again. Boo!

I thought it would be the coil harness again so i gave it another tape up but it made no difference.
The car did run a little hotter than normal for some reason so that may be a factor. Once it cooled down it was ok for another few laps.

Its also idling very poorly and is overfuelling for no apparent reason. Was all tuned on the dyno before racewars and one morning it just randomly started running like poo.

Fuel pressure regulator is my next test, then maybe check for oil blockage in the intercooler??

I'm currently planning a big freshen up including respray so when i get the engine out for that i'll be doing some serious stripping!!

                      • Got it down to Southam Engineering this morning for the final engineer's report ready for pits inspection and certification of mods

Just need to do a little cutting and re-aligning of the zorst system, pop the street tyres back on, quick E85 tune so it passes a 5 gas emissions test, and find an R33 skyline charcoal canister.

Then it's over the pits, and all certified and legal!!

                              • Finally, it's all legal.

For anyone looking at doing this, its not as daunting as it seems.
Step 1: Download 'Application to modify passenger vehicle' form from DoT website & fill it out & send it back.
Step 2: wait for them to send you an approval pending an engineer's report. (they may ask for more info on some of your planned mods).
Step 3: Finish all your work. Like, actually finish it. Properly.
Step 4: Take it to a certified engineer to look over. Give them a copy of your application form and as much spec info on the car prior, as well as after the mods. (weigh bridge receipt, height, track, decibel reading of exhaust, speedo check, brake test, etc). They'll then take photos and using the info you provide write up their report and send it of to DoT. Usually, if there's anything they aren't satisfied with they'll just tell you to fix it up and come back.
Step 5: Wait for the final approval in the mail from DoT. Once it's arrived, book the car in to a certified licensing inspector ('pits') to check it over and give you your piece of paper!!

On step 5, i would highly recommend using a private vehicle inspector. The transport dept ones are generally arseholes.

Then you'll just need to take it in to get the details changed for your rego papers!

                                You're welcome
