  • All Motion 4 Wheel Drive Gearbox Conversion

    Hi all,

Does anybody know how to convert a 4 wheel drive box back to two wheel?
My plan is to only use the drive shalf (diff)to the transfer case for rear wheel drive.

How do i mod the front wheel drive from spinning?
This set up is going in a beetle mid mount setup

    I'm assuming you're using a VR6-family engine?

Just use a Mk3 12v VR6 02A bellhousing (or complete box) and lose the AWD box altogether. Change to a 228mm clutch and flywheel setup and you're done.

Its the 24valve VR6 motor (bora)....Its hard to explain! Iam running a tube chassis...and want to mid mount the engine But cant get it back far enough to use the front drives of the box! ..so some how i need to plug them up and use the transfer case with a cut down tail shaft....

TBH, I think you have backed yourself into a corner! You either run a proper MR setup with a FWD gearbox or an FR layout and a traditional length propshaft!!!

Yes, perhaps a transaxle is more what you're after? that way box and engine run North South and drives the rear wheels.

Various cars had them. Most quiet expensive, probably import only. ZF do one I think. GT40 fords had em, I think some alfas and old audi's had them as well. Perhaps an old beetle style gearbox, reverse mounted could be a solution.

Just a pity i cant get the motor back far enough otherwise i just can use the fwd system only! Like i said earlier there is something i can do with the viscous gears to stop front wheel drive from spinning but still have the RWD still operating

Heres another question? wats the possible angle that i can run drive shafts?...is there drive shaft cages that can take sharp angles?...why i ask this question,is because instead of modding the box icould possibily run the front wheel drive and not run the rear wheel drive transfer...

i thought 4 motion was only reactive?

wouldn't constant rear wheel torque overhead the rear diff if it's only meant for part time use?

if you were going to completely modify the set up, wouldn't it be easier to hack into an audi quattro system?
