It's Here!

Hi Again,

The gearbox and steering rack arrived this morning, along with a few other goodies to make the Polo happy again! The crew are getting stuck into it as we speak, and expect to have the installation finished later tonight or tomorrow. We still have the programming to contend with, but have all the right equipment and software. The techs from South Africa will be in touch with us on Tuesday to talk us through the program.

So it looks like we will be all GO for Rally Q! We will be travelling up to Coolum on Wednesday to do our Documentation, and then on Thursday, Marius and I will spend the day writing the Pace notes for the event. This involves driving over the whole course twice, (approx 800km in a day!) with Marius dictating instructions for me to read back to him during the actual rally! While we are off doing Recce, the crew will present the car for scrutineering. Our Friday will be spent doing the Media events the organisers have planned at Maroochydore Showgrounds, then the event proper begins Friday Night with teh Shootout at the Shjowgrounds. The Rally Proper (Forest Stages) then gets under way on Saturday Morning around the Imbil area. You can find all the details including spectator instructions on www.rallyqueensland.com.au

The trip to Coolum will also be my first opportunity to have a highway run in my new R32. Yum!

Again, it will be great to see you all at the Service areas or in the Forest waving the VW Flags!!

I actually meant Nambour Showgrounds, not Maroochydore Showgrounds: (Pretty slack if the navigator can't give the right directions even before the event has started!)

Nambour Showgrounds Shootout!

The Rally will have its Ceremonial Start and the first two stages at the Nambour Showgrounds on Friday Night. The whole field will be on display, with the opportunity to meet drivers and see the cars up close from about 4pm on Friday afternoon. From about 6.00pm the field is flagged away one by one over the podium in reverse order (slowest to fastest). Then the Shootout begins. It will be two cars at a time starting from opposite ends of the clay track around the edge of the showground arena, (Speedway style). They will do two laps each in an attempt to catch each other, and race the clock! Two sets of hay bails will create chicanes at the mid points.

Once the whole field has passed through for the first time, a second run is then held, with the field ordered in reverse order based on the time achieved on the first pass. Our starting position is a bit low (car Eighteen), but that is due to the massive time lost on our last stage in Canberra after we broke the gearbox. Should be a ripper of a night!

The gearbox installation has been completed, just waiting on the programming tomorrow, wheel alignment on Wednesday, and then we're all go!

Going up Thursday ... do a spot of fishing Friday morning and then to the showgrounds. Stay Thursday & Friday nites, watch some rally Saturday and cruise back to Brissie.

Huge storm came thru shortly after those pics were taken ... so I didn't stay for the opening stage around the showgrounds (which was almost under water within about 10 minutes of the cloudburst) and went to stay at a friend's place. Shane might have some.
