It made 243 kw at the wheels (more than 300kw at the fly) and with specially modified suspension to prevent lift at the front and squatting at the back ran a best of 12.34s over 400ms in 2002. And this was at 1200m above sea-level. There probably was another half a second in it at sea-level but was never tested there.

It had some problems getting cleanly off the line but made up for it once it got going.

Was quicker 40km/h - 200km/h than a 2001 R1 Yamaha bike, tried and tested this a few times against a mate on his. He was very confident beforehand and absolutely gobsmacked afterwards.

    I just read the link.

Not only did you run a 12.34 but at a whopping 123mph! That's got the power for 10 sec potentially. Blasted front wheel drives! Christ that would've been fun.

I'm not going to argue with that one bit, but I'm alittle sceptical on racing an R1.

Don't get me wrong, just my experiences are alittle different when racing bikes & car's.

I've had an R1 & my brother has had an new R6, two new R1's incl. the first of the fuel injected one's with a tune, pipe etc.(power unknown) & an GXSR1000 with tune & pipe making 195hp & there's no way in hell even my cousin's 310kwatw's evo3 could keep up with it after 2nd gear! The evo also ran 127mph. Once the evo got 100kph, the Gixxer was gone!

My friend's RX3 with 280 atw's could give a GSXR 750 a run for it's money & slowly pull away even turning the tyre's but the 1 Litre bike's are another story all together.

All in all, that's still one hell of a beast & would've fun an animal after 80kph running 123mph!

It was geared for only about 220km/h (gearing was quite short in all the gears) and in the rolling runs initially lagged slightly behind the R1, slowly reeling it in to pass at about 160km/h ending up at 200km/h with the R1 (2001 model that ran low 10s quarters the very same day) having its front wheel next to the Golf's rear wheel and from then on aerodynamics (and gearing) meant the R1 was gone

EDIT: Also, remember this was at altitude where the R1 was down on power much more than the turboed Golf. At sea-level I'm sure it would have been the other way around. N/A vehichles lose 18% compared to sea-level. So imagine the R1 with almost 20% less power than what you drove it with. END EDIT.

Power to weight and especially torque to weight meant they were actually quite evenly matched.

I have a 2006 Suzuki GSR600 and it would have killed the Golf off the line but in rolling runs the seat of my pants (as far as it can remember) tells me the Golf would have eaten it.

Traction was the biggest problem and torque steer was truly frightening. It was street legal (well not really, but still registered) and I drove it to work occasionally just for fun.

As somebody said once ... "it was the most fun to be had with your pants on" ...

It is no more though as the guy who bought it from me wrote it off about 6 months after I sold it. Roll cage and seats apparently saved his life ....

my old GLD weighed 870 (weighbridge) with standard trim, 1/4tank fuel. everyhting else was standard (wheels, tyres, engine etc).

a rollcage adds a fair weight to a vehicle, depending how much of it there is (i know i've built 'em).... and the later engine with associated bits.

          off topic. sorry.

I think its all in the launch to get the time down, I launch at about 5000rpm.
Clutch is on the way out but should be good for one more drag night.
                          What you racing?
                          Virus= VR6
Should be good for a numberplate
