Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Did you pick this up from Cricks by chance ? my son and I were there on the 16th December and saw a couple of cars under wraps . He was buying a dare I say it 3 year old Chrysler 300 SRT8 from them we spent half a day sitting in the showroom whilst negotiating the buggers into giving him a good deal .

I can only take there word for it as was motorway driving home. but didn't notice..

        Oil & Filter at 1000-1500km
I requested this in the contract when I bought our RS.
The reply was "can do that, never done before."
Also requested a cylinder compression test and a full wheel alignment.
Same reply as as above. ie never done before.

I asked for the filter, photos below.
Service Guy said engines are run in from factory, and he looked at the paperwork funny when he seen 1000km oil & filter...
They wouldn't keep the oil for me
If you want to be padantic and change oil like the "Ye good old days" fine but what is a compression test at 1k going to prove.
Considering most engines these days are very low friction and let oil, through this will disguise any fault as it ends up like a wet test anyway.
Even if they found a cylinder or 2 low they won't swap the engine straight up. The EA888 gen 3 has very little issues with oil usage or ring failure like the old twin charger did. It just asking for the tech (most likely an apprentice getting a sign of as this worth happen very often )
To screw something up and cause more damage. Busting a coil connector. Cracking the plastic causing a spark leak. Cross threading a spark plug ect.

I agree with today's engineering standards and also something to go wrong (finger trouble).
But I'm happy to run the risk to sleep well at night...

          I'll be getting a price for a oil/filter at 7500km also...
Like the old turbo car system.
Had an old Cosworth, 6 months oil and filter.

Agree with the mid service oil change especially being in Tropical climate and turbo but even if the compression check was free the problems that could insue from using the wrong adapter in the hole or dropping **** in there just to name two is not worth the risk considering you probably got extended warranty. If it's going to fail it will in that time. The art of old school diagnosis has gone by the way side for the new gen of techs. If the computer says no then that's it to them. Not there fault it's just the training they get now. Plus common sense is a rare commodity in those born in the late 90's.

Yea I hear ya mate, old school is long gone...
I just sneak in to the common sense bracket,88

Nah no extra warranty, and it's probably going to be a long term car for us, thus I'm trying to do the best for it, the old school way...

Guess we will see how the plays out
                Cheers

Being with the k's I do, mine will be due every 4.5-5 months for a service anyway and mostly highway k's
Good quality synthetic oil makes a difference
If I was doing a mid change, they are very easy to do yourself

Yeah was me, i was used to Japanese cars getting the oil changed at the 1000 or 1500 km mark. Even my diesel Santa Fe had it. But those apart from the Santa Fe had 6mth service with cheap oil unless you told them otherwise. I asked over and over again including my cousin who is an ex Honda/Mazda mechanic then later a vw/Audi and the answer was leave the factory oil in.

I kept our 2008 RS until this year and my parents have it, all is good. I have a slight rattle where you are talking about at certain revs on hills using the clutch since new but is so slight I haven't bothered. I already had to go back to get the tint fixed and the scratches/cuts in the glass fixed where they cut into the windows doing the tint so not keen on seeing them anytime soon again.

Btw the car run in period, i.e. Ramp up the revs etc is between 1500-2000kms so might have paid to leave the oil in until that was done.

Run in period - drive it like you stole it
Drive it like an old man it will always be a slug, drive it like a race car it will always be a nice free revving engine (within reason) I spent 12 years in automotive and you could always tell the difference
With engine technology and metals used in engine cylinder bores the old school method of "running in" no longer applies
Piston rings like to have moderation - driving for long periods without varying revs/load will do far more damage
