  • MDI Connection for iPod / iPhone

Picked up my first Skoda last month after years of wanting one. I've got the Octavia Scout 110TDI, no options, and love it. But one thing I can't work out is the MDI function. I'm wanting to connect an iPod via the MDI so I can connect my android phone by Bluetooth, but I can't find the MDI port. The manual says MDI is standard. The dealer tells me that MDI connection is via the USB port, but neither of our iPods are recognised when I plug them in that way. Does anyone have any tips?

Thanks Kamold, but that cable has an MDI plug and my issue is that there doesn't appear to be an MDI port in the car despite it being listed as standard. The dealer tells me that the USB now functions as an MDI port, but it won't recognise my iPod. A cable won't do it, unless there is a specific iPod to USB cable over and above the one that Apple provides with iPods.

        That's not USB...

I've had the same lingering question since getting my Scout 110 a few months back, so if anyone knows the answer, there are now two of us who are keen to know!

My previous car (nothing flash - a 2012 Ford Focus Trend) talked to Apple products straight from the factory. Would be pretty disappointing if a substantially newer (and more expensive) car with a higher-spec stereo didn't come standard with that capability...

Some do, some still use those stupid cables. I found out Santa Fe needed an $80 cable and yet the cheapest Getz didn't. Logic doesn't always need to apply. Having said that I find bluetooth works better than the cable. The cable puts everything in the ancient iPod mode which is tedious for finding/selecting songs.

Ah sorry, you have a MkIII Octy...

            (From Briskoda)

You may need a Mitsumi Apple device connection:
Allows Apple devices to be controlled through the car's touchscreen system.
This replaces the USB and aux-in port. Additional connection cable is required, available through your dealer.

On the Infotainment page it also informs Apple users they either use Bluetooth or swap the USB and aux-in for the Mitsumi socket.

Columbus head unit has ipod functionality by default, however the standard Bolero head unit needs the optional Mitsumi socket.
Or you can just use the SDCard slot for music...

i think I read somewhere in the instructions (!) that you can't connect a device via USB and BT at the same time... (sorry.. don't have them handy to check).

Is the phone connected via BT while you are trying this?

Thanks for both replies Kamold. I'm going to talk to the dealer again because the brochure definitely says MDI is standard even in the base model, which comes with the Bolero.

Maybe the SD Card option is easier. I've never moved any music from iTunes to an SD card but hopefully it's not that hard.

I'm normally ok with technology but for some reason all the different ways of dealing with music seem to be beyond me. Appreciate all the advice.

No I left the phone in the house so it wasn't being picked up on BT. And I tried with two iPods via the USB with no success.

I know I can just use BT for the phone and play music from there, but I liked the idea of controlling everything via the head unit rather than being tempted to hold a phone while driving.

I don't have a MKIII, but from what I read there is MDI via USB in the Bolero, but by default this does not support ipod connectivity unless built after a certain date. Columbus Nav units support it by default. If you don't have the Mitsumi adapter you either need to have it retrofitted, or use the SDCard or BT streaming.

Thats the way I read it. You may well get very confusing if not incorrect info from the dealer. This is unfortunately not uncommon, particularly with specific infotainment features like this.

Good luck. I escalated this with a dealer and Skoda Australia shortly after mine was delivered and neither were particularly concerned the brochure was incorrect.

Thanks Kamold. Sounds like that's at the source of the issue. Just spoke to the dealer and they'll have a look with my equipment next time I'm in the neighbourhood.

Ah ok, so it's a known issue then? That's annoying. I don't want this to be the thing that sours my Skoda experience. The silly thing is an MDI was hardly a make or break deal for me, it's just when the brochure says it's there and turns out not to be, it's frustrating.

I loaded 500 songs from Itunes to an SD card and it works very well (mk III Occy). I have 5 sources of music: 2 SD cards, the Jukebox internal hard drive and plug in device and blue tooth. Cant complain.

My ipod works fine through the USB port, all album covers show up on the screen and all functions are available. My Nokia is also connected by Bluetooth at the same time.
