Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

    • Just spent all day repairing/correcting the "professional" audio install in my car.
Will go see the guy who did the initial installation next week for a significant refund, but on the plus side, what was a pretty average sounding setup is now very impressive: should be even better once it's all run in...

      • I'm looking to go back to where mine was done early 2014. Had a series of issues which can only lead back to them doing a completely crap install that has caused nothing but trouble the past 18mths.

        • Yeah: mine was completed last week, but I wasn't happy with the sound. I started poking around, and discovered one issue after another... Overall, I'm feeling better having redone the work myself, so I know it's done right, but I'm still royally p*ssed off at the shoddy work...

            • Well I knew it would happen one day, should be grateful it took more than 8 months.

Anyway, finished at the gym and came out to this

Spent a bit of time on it and got it like this

Took it to a body shop, they estimated $800-$1000 to take the dent out and fix up the paint. Seems high. Anyone know of anyone in Newcastle that can do a good job for me for less then that?

                • Finished wiring in the hardware for iPhone control, and it works: winning!

Also ordered a bluefin preloaded with stage 1 tune from the UK. Unsure whether I'll install the stage 1, or go straight for stage 2.

                  Opinions?

                  • If you want a cheaper job, then someone like the touch up guys would be the go. If you want it done by a body shop properly then a respray and matching down the side would happen. I had a rear ender in my other car and it cost about $500 to get two deep long scratches resprayed down both passenger doors but they were already doing the rear end work so was likely a bit cheaper than normal.

I'll just go to the body shop, they do a good job there and I'll just cop it on the chin.

As it will be a couple months before they have availability, I tried to get the dealer to supply me some touch up paint so I can just stop the bare metal from rusting. Quoted me $41 for a 15mL bottle. Anyone know of anywhere I can get touch up paint for a more reasonable price? I see people on Briskoda getting it for 5 pounds. Item number 3T0050300F7A.

I've found these that are far more reasonable. Any one had any experience with these?

                      • My car would be available for pickup finally this week, but with some faffing about won't be until I'm away tomorrow. So organised to pick up Wed next week. Today I get the call, the Finance person doesn't work Wed so can we change the day. FFS they knew the delivery date and only now tell me. They don't work today either and noone thought about this yesterday when we could have done something. Add this to the 2-3wks now they have taken to get back to me about adding in two other items. Still don't have an answer for it either, so can't even work out the total amount owing and what will be deposit. And I will be mostly out of contact the next two days and we have a public holiday Monday. The salesguy quitting and moving to another dealer last week. And the manager being away so everyone is working blind. Oh and they can't tell me where the car will be delivered yet, as they are moving showrooms and not sure exactly where.....how hard can it truly be.

                          • I had found when washing the car that I was getting dribbles of dirty water from both sides, just behind the front wheel arches: I had suspicions that my car had sat outside for an extended period prior to my ownership, as every time I washed it I was cleaning significant amounts of crud from all the boos and crannies: the gap under the rear glass, the side bump strips etc.

So yesterday I decided to loosen the inner front wheel arches and see why I'm dealing with:

It was the same on both sides: heaps of dirt and leaf litter: not sure if this is a common occurrence, but probably worth checking for those with 1z bodies- it takes a couple of minutes, and you only need to rove 4 screws on each side. It had obviously been there for a while: the dirt was caked on and took a fair amount of scrubbing to remove...

                            • Nice work mate - i had a similar level of crud in my Mk6 GTI front guards when i bought it 2nd hand. I spent the 1st week doing a full detail inside, outside, and under.

                              • My OBDeleven arrived, activated Traffic, Laptimer, Dimming DRLs when blinking and tear drop wipe front and back, also trailing auto lock when the keyfob is outside of the car and the doors are closed to see if i like it. All pretty straight forward and worked first time.

Couple of tips if you are thinking of getting the ODBeleven because it comes with zero instructions:

Changes sometimes take a little bit to show up, i figure the car needs to reinitialize everything. and you need a to have reception on your phone (or be within range of your wifi) to get the OBDeleven to connect .. i sat for about 40 mins in my parking garage trying to get it to connect before i thought to try it out on the street, worked first time.

Also ignition needs to be ON.

Worth the $80 IMO, very cool being able to turn new features on your car
