  • I'm planning on an interim 7500k service at least for the first one. It has vw504 oil stock. Oil analysis might be a good way to go.

Only concerned because the manual says over 110 = bad and you can easily get that in normal driving conditions. Considering my 2l TSI in previous rs was at least 10deg cooler in all conditions made me ask the question. Water temp obviously does not move.

Oil temp is fast more useful than water temp. Oil takes longer to heat up and has more effect on engine wear. As a rule, I always drive it gently until it has at least 80deg c temp on the oil.

    • The water temp will never move unless things are really bad. The gauge is designed so that at about 80c it's at halfway & will stay there right through to 120 (rough figures). So there can be a 40c variation in water temp & the gauge won't move off halfway.

Just remember that right at this very moment, there's some hoon in Europe that has his 1.4tsi sitting on 220kph and the engine is loving it.

We really don't push our cars very hard here.

I agree that oil temp is important but if you see the amount of posts since the temp gauge was fitted to the MK6 Golf where people are concerned about oil temp... It never happened with the Mk5 and MkVs weren't blowing-up all over the shop.

      • I do agree we don't push cars hard here in comparison.

Is be surprised if the cars coming system allowed 40deg C fluctuation in water temp, sounds like it's under sized! My bikes have had digital water temp gauges for years, and they typically vary by 15-20 degrees at most for normal operating temps. That's from highway cruising in cold temps (low single figures) to track days in high temps (30deg c). Typically, around 88deg as 'normal' and 106 when the thermostat opened, 108 for fan on. Have never seen above 108 on any of those bikes.

Interesting you say they have that sort of temp variation in these cars though. That's quite a lot!

I didn't say the cooling system allows a 40c temp variation. I said the gauge allows a 40c variation in temp without moving off the "normal mark".

Normal is supposedly 90c but the gauge will stay on that mark if the engine temp is between 70c & 105c (you can check this by logging temps with VCDS or scangauge).

Why does VW do this? Because people would freak out if the gauge fluctuated.

            • Ah, yes that makes more sense. I know the gauge status the same, no matter what (in the car). Makes sense to calibrate it that way.

Antiplastix, I asked because the manual specifically quotes temperatures of oil as 'normal' range, and I go over that in normal driving. It specifically says avoid revs and load if you go over that temp. Why would they put it in the manual if it wasn't important? Why wouldn't they make it 130 of that's the safe operating range for the engine? If it didn't have a gauge I wouldn't know about it, but why give a gauge, then have normal above what is quoted? I'm just asking others if that was 'normal' for them. Obviously it is, but clearly reality is different to the manual. I'll question it at service time, but I'm not worried about it so much I wouldn't drive the car. Merely a question for other mechanically minded people.

Personally, I'd like an oil pressure gauge too!

              • Maybe because in Europe they do long life servicing. If the oil is 28,000km old & you are getting up it maybe 110c is a bit of a worry.

                • I imagine we would see much higher temps than most of Europe. Although you would imagine smashing down an autobahn at $1.60 oil would heat up.

Anyway, it seems 'normal' so I'll let the dealer explain it when it gets serviced. I have been doing some reading and it seems new vw engines are designed to run hotter, to keep oil thinner for reduced friction/improved economy. It's certainly hotter than my last gen engine.

Def wouldn't be an engine id cheap out on oil for!

                  • Just reading a car review of a BMW 435i Coupe ( BMW 435i Gran Coupe 2015 Review – Car Reviews, News & Advice - CarPoint Australia ) where the reviewer was waxing lyrical on it possibly being BMW's best looking and most versatile vehicle.
The following paragraph caught my attention:

"I will however use a few more words to reinforce my assertion regarding the 435i Gran Coupe's packaging versatility. I'm not damning this car with faint praise when I suggest the only similar-sized car (note that word – not wagon or crossover) with the same sort of accommodating luggage space is Skoda's excellent Octavia. Although the 4 Gran Coupe's rear suspension does intrude into the useable space more than our Czech mate, there's still some serious luggage landscape – and that's before the 40:20:40 rear seats are tumbled."

BMW, the car for people with more money than sense

Haha ... really .. it's not really much of a comparison to an Octavia ? It's 3 times the price, 1.5 times the capacity, 50 kw more ... but smaller boot. OK.
