Done. Can Anyone recommend an oil for top ups? I've seen a Castrol 5w-30 which is VW compliant, but i've only seen it in a 5L bottle. And i would hate to spend $75 if there's an alternative.

Edit - I've updated my sig but it isn't showing up. Weird.

      • Penrite enviro+ 5w-30 is vw 504/507 approved, about $17/ bottle from supercheap

Edit: for 1l that is. ~75 for 5l. Wait for sc 20% off sale, or repco oil sale and you can get it for $55-60

Awesome, i'll check it out. Only had the car two weeks and noticed today that the oil was at 3/4 on the dipstick.

          • Mine was delivered like that. Top it up to full before you think you're losing oil

            • Since my first oil change I use Liquid Moly 5-30 Top Tec 4200. I have a 1 litre bottle in the boot. You can pick it up from Autobarn. I paid $20 through my mechanic.

You've probably got sigs turned off.

GL lubricants does Mobil1 504/507 in quart bottles (950ml) for about $13.50. There's 6 bottles in a carton. he's got a web site & an ebay store.

The rock bottom cheapest you'll get 504/507 is $55 on a discount offer

                • To the experts here - has anyone used Fuchs lubricants? What is your experience like? How are they compared to Penrite?

Which one do you recommend for the Octavia RS - Fuchs Lubricants (Australasia) Pty Ltd - Home.

                  • I use Fuchs exclusively on my motorbikes now. It's great oil. Search for the vw504/507 rating and buy that one

                    • I tried Fuchs in the Subaru when I had it and it seemed fine - as good as any of the Mobil1, Castrol, etc that I poured into it. The only reason I didn' continue with use was the shop I boutght it from was inconvenient to get to.

                      The VW504/507 is TITAN GT1 PRO C-3 SAE 5W-30

                      502.00 is the GT1 Pro-Flex 5w-30 and the GT1 5w-40

                      • Thanks Brad. I've read good things about their oil for VAG cars. Any idea if they are at par or better than Penrite?

I'm leaning towards Fuchs, just want to see what others think.

These engines do tend to use a bit of oil, depending on the individual engine and the individual driver! May as well go with the 5 litre bottle if you do many kms per year.

No idea, the tech data sheet might offer some comparable data. I just remembered, the other brand I was using in the Liberty was Motul - it was great when new (much quieter on startup) but appeared to lose viscosity fairly quickly.

I really don't think there's a huge difference between them as they all meet a minimum spec (504.00/507.00). The really serious oil guys would disregard the VW spec & look soley at the data of the oil & pick from there.

FYI: I got 5 Mann oil filters really cheap (like $10 each) and I got 10L of Castrol Edge 5w-30 VW502.00 for $60 so I'll be going back to 502.00 for the 157,500 & 172,500 services. I still have no idea what the workshop uses - he just points to a big drum and I pay the money & get a stamp in the service book.

Here's the figures - they all look pretty close to me (but I'm a near enough/good enough type guy).

There's probably some essential figures missing eg: base number is important I believe.

Somebody smarter than me will know.

                            • Anyone know the weight of the anthracite gemini? I've seen that other 18inch octavia wheels are 14kg such as the pictoris and turini.

                              • Probably 14kg?

Time to upgrade to VMR's for some unsprung weight loss. 10.43kg per rim for VMR V710's (18's)
