I'm taking the Golf wagon out for a spin tomorrow, so see how that goes compared to the Octavia. Just a shame I wont be able to do the two cars back-to-back due to time constraints (got to hand the baby over to his dad over his lunch break, and this is the only chance for almost 2 weeks).

oh, and FWIW, if I go with the Octavia, I wont be getting the tech pack - I find the computer telling me how to park anoying (and Im a woman).
HAHA, may be that's why my wife didn't want it.

There are three more reasons we went for the Octavia that I forgot to mention.

    1. Octavia in Ambition Plus trim has side airbags in the rear seats (total 9 airbags vs 7 in the Golf), some extra potection especially for babies / kids in the rear seats.

    2. While the boot in the Octavia is slight shallower that the Golf, it means there are more rear leg room and my wife said that will help her putting the baby in the rear seat.

    3. The rear view vision is better in the Octavia.

Hi guys I want my next car to be a fun drive..
I read a ton of reviews and this is what I take from them

Golf wagon is like the Golf hatch, great ride and bags of fun to drive because of the chasis

Yet the Octvaia reviews say is 95% the same car as the golf, same chasis just bigger and better value.
But ALL say its good to drive but NOT "Fun" to drive..

      why is this?

Go drive it and see for yourself. Sometimes journo's pick huge differences in cars that simply arent there. Also, for people considering golf vs octavia, skoda's website incorrectly shows a 588L boot for the wagon (and golf is 605L) - however some research shows this was for the previous octavia, as the current mk3 actually has 610L boot. So dont necessarily take specs off the website as fact......

I drove both, and while the golf is just slightly better finish inside (and it is slight) the fact you cant get the 103 in anything but highline, and there is no manual option available sealed the deal. Octavia also has better safety (more airbags) and a few more options available. You can damn near get an elegance for the same price as a highline wagon, so make sure you compare those two if you are comparing.

Lastly, I believe they say it because the octavia below elegance 132TSI/110TDI has a torsion beam rear suspension instead of multilink suspension. It means the ride/handling isnt quite as good, but for most normal people, its not an issue. For racing, or really spirited driving it makes a difference, but for pootling around town/highway unless your doing back to back drives with the two different suspension types - you simply wouldnt notice it. I had a previous gen RS and the ambition (or ambition+/elegance 103) wagons ride fine. Even with 18's.

Far out im hoping that this comes out asap...
          Golf R Wagon

Will be a good option instead of the new RS if you want golf R specs in the same/similar size...

It will require both kidneys and a first born child though.

I test drove both. I found that the 90kw vs 103kw made a difference to the drive (for me). I like having a bit more power IYKWIM.

The Golf Comfortline Wagon and Octavia Ambition Plus Wagon with DSG were pretty much the same price from the dealer, the golf was boring to drive, it rolled around the corner and lacked power / torque. The Octavia felt a bit sportier.

Thats what I want to hear (believe)
Hows the handling in the Octavia with the non-IRS config though?
Does it loose anything or are we hard pressed to notice?

You don't notice a difference until you get on a broken surface, then the ride turns choppy. On city streets and the highway it is indistinguishable.

I found no difference in normal driving.

Good to hear it wasn't just me then. No doubt ride quality of multi link is better, but not by a lot for the majority of driving.

The Golf wagon highline trim might be better as it has 17" with multi-link, but it is expensive...

It's more expensive than an elegance...... Could prob get the 132tsi with multilink for the same price.

The only issue i had with the elegance were the 18", a bit too noisy on the road to my liking.
