Skoda Octavia Wagon or Golf Wagon

A couple of manual wagons have popped up on Carsales listed as being in stock, although I suspect it is a dealer being a little deceiving and listing cars that they don't actually have in stock, but are en route to Australia

So for those who have the Ambition Plus Wagon + DSG, how do you find the car on highway (eg, 110km/h on the Calder in VIC)? Noise, stability, any issue with the car so far, especially people who has driven over 50,000 km?

And quality of service of the car, how's the dealer that you use?

Seriously, how many people would you have expected to have done 50,000km by now when the Mk3 was released only 6 months ago? That's like 250km+ per day, every day. The only person I can envisage doing those miles is the guy that bought the Mk2 in SA for courier work.

The MK2 is a great highway tourer. You can drive from dawn to dusk & a bit more & step out of the car feeling great. I can't see the Mk3 being a step backwards.

You will be surprised by the number of people that I know who lives in the country and drive to the city everyday, 1.5 - 2 hours each way. But any how, today's car industry is that a step backwards does happen because they try to fit more equipment into the car and sell it for a similar price to previous gen, to do that, they have to cut cost somewhere...

I commute from the city to the country every day and still only manage 90km daily for 2 hours driving... and only 5 days of driving.

Given the poor stock availability & limited number of deliveries I'd still think finding an Australian MK3 Octavia with "over 50,000km" would be akin to finding snowballs in Hell.

maybe ask at Briskoda as they've had the mk3 a bit longer than us (but consider 15,000miles/annum big driving)

ah, the people I know travel between bendigo / ballarat to the city, mon-fri haha, they love the life style of the country and the jobs in the city.

Thanks for the suggestion, but how does the road quality compare to that of Australia? I do drive on the Calder a fair bit and my current Mazda 3 MPS gets quite tiring due to the 18" wheels and sport suspension...

I have a 2007 Mk2 1.8tsi manual Elegance sedan. In stock form, a mate of mine who is very fussy about suspension tune (He's had an Elise & an Evora) said that the stock Octavia Elegance would be an ideal vehicle for a 'round Australia & up the middle trip (which he did in a Gen4 Liberty with Bilsteins).

I now run 17"s instead of 16"s, have fitted Koni Yellows when the OEM dampers got too sloppy at 105,000km & have Eibach springs designed for a vRS diesel wagon (much stiffer on the rear). I've had it on a few dirt roads lately & it rides beautifully (I was expecting to lose a few fillings) - better than my wife's Captiva7 on the same roads.

Just go and drive one. If your dealer is serious they'll let you do an extended test drive.

Ok thanks, I asked because going for a test drive is a bit different to driving the same car day in day out, and some times, you don't find the little things about the car after having it for a while. It would be go if I could rent one and have it for a week or so haha.

I had a classic Mazda 6 and used to drive a first gen MPS 3. Both cars were really harsh compared to our Mk2 RS which is sitting on less rubber as well. I think you will find it much nicer. Mazda seem to prefer thump and bump to gain sportiness. I drive on some pretty crappy roads and seeing as you are near me I'm guessing the tram tracks around the place are fun.

I do have a 1st gen MPS 3 too, torque steer + tram track is fun haha. Few years back I had no issue with the sportiness and harshness of the MPs but now that I commute more with my wife and going to have a family, need something more comfortable. I still remember my wife told me that she could not nap in the car because it's too noisy and harsh haha.

I was lucky when skodas were the general car for Europcar. I got a wagon for a week. That pretty much sold me on it. Mind you, it was a std wagon tsi and I got and RS diesel....

I bought my car undriven, unbuilt, unseen, as that is what I wanted. I did drive a DSG diesel just after signing the papers and surprised the dealer on the route I took through Mt eliza, -> canadian Bay -> two bays rd with platform speed humps, twistys and opening it up a bit. I wanted to see how the diesel handled in mountain corners.

I was sold, the dealer was unsettled.... Mind you, that drive confirmed one thing, DSG's and I just dont get along. We agree to disagree.

Glad I got my diesel manual, just drove to port fairy and back in wet and dry. Loved it, would get back in and do it again.

oh wow, that was quite a drive! Did you go to Frankston / Brighton Skoda and how's their sale and after-sale service if you don't mind sharing?

Haha, I had plenty of fun in the Dandenongs with the MPS, I also took the MPS to Tas for a one week trip. Going to trade it in at some stage though, and trying to decide either the Golf or Octavia wagon (non-RS).

I'm with you - though never had the DSG option, as I bought the TDI Scout 2nd hand, but would have chosen the manual anyway. I LOVE the manual - after suffering an underpowered Apollo auto for 10 years I have rediscovered the fun of 'driving'. Mind you, that grunty TDI has a lot to do with the fun factor - throw in the remap and ... having trouble reining it in! On an open road (away from prying eyes) it is incredible.
