  • New tyres

It's time for some new tyres. It's a standard 09 Octavia vrs with 18" Neptunes which I believe are 18 x 7.5 ET51. The current tyre is 225/40 R18, but as these are quiet expensive I'm wanting to know has anyone fitted 235/40 R18s? The tyre place thinksare 90% sure it will be fine, but I'm sure someone has done this before and could confirm either way.

It is certainly possible for a 235/40 R18 tyre to be physically fitted on a 7.5J wheel.

However, a 235/40 R18 tyre is not an approved fitment on a 7.5J wheel. The allowable rim width range is actually 8.0J to 9.5J. The workshop should have a copy of the Tyre and Rim Standards Manual confirming this.

These approvals are made by the TRAA (in liaison with their overseas counterparts - i.e. TRA, JATMA and ETRTO) and is used as a point of reference for tyre and wheel manufacturers, as well as vehicle manufacturers, when designing their products.

Fitting a tyre and wheel combination not listed in a recognised Tyre and Rim Standards Manual (i.e. Australian, US, Japanese or European) will usually render the vehicle unroadworthy.

On the other hand, there are provisions in the regulations that allow for exemptions (loosely speaking) to this rule. I imagine this is to allow vehicles that have tyre and wheel combinations not listed in the Tyre and Rim Standards Manual fitted as standard, but have been approved by the vehicle manufacturer.

Having said all that, it hasn't stopped a few people from doing so anyway - ball is in your court.

        Try Installer Finder

I've heard a few good reviews on them and they have Potenza S001's for sub $200 a tyre in the correct size. On their home page they have a search function to find which place local to you does fitting for $25 a corner.

i too explored the option of putting 235s on my neptunes, but everywhere i looked, i came to the same conclusion - u need a minimum 8" wide rim to fit 235mm tyres. not saying it hasn't been done before - its just not recommended, plus ur giving ammo (to deny) for the manufacturer or insurer regarding warranty/insurance claims.

          the neptunes r 7.5".

so i just ended up getting the usual 225/40/18s - Conti ContiSportContact 5. $240 a corner fitted and balanced.

            Where from?

How are they with road noise? As another has already identified, the wagons can suffer from drone. I'm hoping some new tyres will resolve some of the issue.

I recently put 4 Toyo T1Z s on for $165 each in the 225s from St. George Tyres. At that price they are a bargain, some people don't rate them that good but I find them better noise wise than the original Dunlops and just as good in the wet.

I went for Michelin PS3s 235/40/r18 but the wheels are audi and 8" wide... looks very well suited to it. I say just keep that size you have now. On the plus side, going bigger gave it a nicer wider stance in the arches

                  got them from bobjane.

road noise is definitely a lot better, but then again, when i compare them to tyres that have done 62,000 kms - its unfair. they probably had about 2mm left.
my previous tyres were contisportcontact 2.

I got 235/40R18 tyres on my rims, which are 18x7.5 - same as the Neptunes.
Hankook Ventus V2 Concept - awesome tyres, especially at $140-$160/corner fitted/balanced. Will replace these ones with more, especially now that they're 20,000km old and (after a rotation) will easily last another 15,000km!!!
Grip to no end and excellent dry performance. Wet cornering is good, but accell leaves a bit to be desired. Wet braking is a-okay.

Wow Bob Jane must really jack up their quoted prices...

I just inquired online, and was quoted $360 a corner for CS5s (which is claimed to be a discounted price from $497 RRP!!)
They have a price match guarentee so I might have to test that against Tempe tyres, I'm sure they'll come up with some sort of excuse as to why their $230 per corner is not a valid quote...

A lot of us are running 8" wide rims so we can safely and legally use 235/40 tires
I would not run 235 on a 7.5" rim - it will be fine until you have a accident, at that time it may become a huge headache

You just need to shop around for tyres, there are plenty of cost effect tyres in the 225/40 size
In Sydney we do tyre/price research and then go to haggle with Tempe tyres

Noise wise, new tyres (full tread) will take the edge off that
The Continentals are somewhat loud - especially through pot holes
The Michelin PS3's are pretty good on noise - but they are a much more expensive tyre
Look for the low rolling resistance tyres to get minimal noise and best fuel economy (these won't be high performance however)

When you approach tyres shops you need to have done your research and know what the specific tyre can be purchased for in order to get a real and reasonable price

                              That seems sort of pointless?

When Tempe quote $230 on their website fitted, why would I go to Bob Jane who quoted via email $360? They haven't even had a chance to be competitive. If they quoted say $280, then I'd consider the fact they are closer to me and try to bargain. At 60% more they just seem like a ripoff. I guess if they quote that and people pay then they're winning....

Anyway I'll try my luck walking in and testing their price match I've nothing to lose. Just have a drive over to Tempe.
