When I tried it accidentally, (knew it was loose but was only going a short distance) I hit a bump there was visible movement of the rear hatch and I felt as though my head exploded from the compression.
The rumbling is different and is the thin but high tensile steel boot floor that is very resonant and easily stimulated. Mine was only slight and was improved by chocking the spare wheel and actually loosening the plastic securing nut slightly.
Others have had it worse and some have had rear shocks replaced, also reported as a problem in some MQB based Golfs.
With regard to the Wheels magazine issues, since they were complaining about the ride quality of the base Octavia then it would have had the 16 inch steel wheels which should have theoretically have supplied the most compliant ride. Really odd since GTR27 has got something like 18 inch on his and seems happy enough to be contemplating 19 inch.
