Time to post up some much awaited Winton Fun Day photos! First time on the track and had a ball. My dad really struggled with the race lines and pretty much sat in the middle of the track and had trouble letting people over take lol.. Car went amazing especially after the timing belt change. Brakes lasted for ten laps at a time somehow! But as soon as I tried to make up time from braking hard they were too hot after about 4-5 corners (after a cool lap as well!).

Overall the day was run and managed well, with the ability to spend pretty much all day out there if you wanted to, you just have to keep swapping from with/without passenger (run in 20 minute blocks). Petrol is 50c cheaper in Benalla, I went through 2/3 of a tank after roughly 50 laps/150km lol. There is actually some great racing moments that were had, and also if you wait till the later 2-3 hours of the day, you can time your cool-laps right so that you have an uninterrupted run, to get the best time. I had Race-Chrono running, which is a pretty amazing app, but my battery died so I lost my fastest times I reckon my best would have been 1.49-1.50 at this point (recorded 1.52 earlier. So much understeer was the hold-back.

Best recorded 1.52 before phone died

Yes. I got rid of the sides, uprights and bottoms, rear sound proof and floor mats. The upright with the center section easily weighs 30kg. It feels ridiculous

I got up to a few things over the weekend and tonight. On Thursday I picked up a carbon wing to suit a MK6 golf from slowmotion at the weekly vag meet in Williamstown, for a low low price . Knowing it wouldn't fit, the intention was to use it to make a fibreglass mold, which I could then use to shape a complete fibreglass wing.

How it started. The tips really hang down!

Once I saw it against the car I started to believe it would fit with some shaving. After three days of thinking about it I started cutting it up and the rest speaks for itself! I'm very very happy with the result, it looks tops. I made a few scratches on it in the process... but overall it looks great, almost not retrofitted! I needed to keeping shaving the corners to meet the shape of the rear pillars, while also trimming the distance along the windows to get it closer, and also keep a gap between the outer body and the wing so that the wing doesnt scratch the paint when it comes down when closing the hatch. This process ended up taking 6 hours before I filled it with expandafoam for strength and added some fibreglass to strengthen the tips that hang off the side. And in case your wondering, the whole thing including Sika Auto and expandafoam weights a touch over a kg With the wind itself weighing 830g once I shaved it down.

I CANNOT STRESS ENOUGH THAT IF YOU DO THIS DIY, OR FILE/SAND/CUT ANY CARBON FIBRE, PLEASE USE PROPER DUST FILTER MASKS. Carbon is very intrusive and can cause cancer in the lungs. Don't use ****ty disposable filters. Use ones with rubber fittings. They cost roughly $45 from total tools..

The first major section of cutting and shaping

Good ol' expandafoam to help keep it rigid

I had to keep wiping this stuff off as it grew out!

I fiberglassed the corners as there was a crack happening in a couple of seems, and just for general stiffness

Starting to apply Sika Auto once the resin had dried

I shall get some nicer pics after I've trimmed back the excess silicone and smoothed out the forward join along the middle

The tail light just fits under so you can see most of it. You can see it from on top of the car haha, so I'm not sure if I'll cover the red part on top... See the next pic..

It really sits nice and adds some length to the car somehow. Like Stags with the roof-line all the way to the back, I feel like this car isn't very aggressive with its stock top. From the side you can see the wing actually has a nice upwards flick to it, so it will provide some down-force at track speeds. I got it more for the looks, but more track days are definitely on the cards... After all, I'm going to have to put this recent acquisition to use!!!

                    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So tonight I finished a couple of quick little 'convenience' mods that I've had in mind since forever. I cannot believe I waited for this long and how quick they were to do, with these little lights sitting in the draw for months...

So the first one is something I've wanted to do for about two years - since half way through owning my previous car... I finally did it tonight after fighting the mental block, and it took me an hour.... See I've always found it, 'not difficult' but not timely to reverse park in the dark at night. My crewman had a very tall rear and even after 50mm lowering the tail lights were still so high so no light made it to the curb. My Octy has the problem that the windows are so tinted I can hardly see through the mirror to the curb :p .

So the solution was these $2 screw type lights from AliExpress! These are round and have a thread behind them with a locking collar so you can mount them inside a panel. I ran them from the rear bumper near the wheel, up through the one way exit-air vent, up the the rear light panel, and ta-da! Heaps easier to see that curb, take less time parking, less 'guessing', and less gutter rash!

Ocky straps everywhere!!! Handy to hold stuff out of the way instead of removing them :p

Where I soldered on to the reverse light so it only comes on when in reverse

See where I ran the wire through the circuit board and the air vent?

Neat little inconspicuous circle. I could have gone lower with it, but I wanted it clear of mud

Decent output! This is with the car jacked up and wheels off the ground... And the curb non-existant. It will seem brighter ones those two factors are opposite

I will also get a nicer picture tomorrow night with the dslr of how it looks like through the tint and mirror inside the car.

My third mod for today is much simpler. I added some cargo area lighting! Because why not? $5 for the lights from AliExpress

I unplugged the top rear light, and the rear pillars with the abs mounted, and stuck these little beauties here with the 3m strip supplied cut to size. The wire is hidden on top of the trim.

You can hardly make out theres anything there from the outside

I had to extend the wire lengths by 6 inches. Once that was done I twisted both + and - together, then soldered them directly (ghetto-ly) to the led holder

                      Result!

Very bright, and no, this didn't reduce the power of the middle rear light or any lights in the car

I hope you enjoyed viewing these as much as I did making them!

Very nice, Mike. The spoiler came out great and the additional lighting you did was a terrific idea.

Great mods... Not sure how keen I'd be to drill holes in the body to fit a couple of reverse lights. I think you're braver than me - only gone a far as interior trims... Aren't you concerned about reduced body stiffness and more flex?
I'd be seeing if I could fit some felt/rubber to the outside edges of the spoiler just so it doesn't rub against your paint I when you get a chance.
Also probably too late to do it but I've changed my 3rd brake light for a blackout/smoked version. It's a genuine Hella part from ECS though not sure if this would fit the Octy.

The reverse light things are pretty neat but I'd be more inclined to fit them to a bracket under the car (maybe just a big blob of roof & gutter silicone) and have them pointing more rearwards or frontwards so you get a bigger light puddle. A similar concept to having a fixed line machine gun firing diagonally across a line of attack rather than straight at the attack - you cover a bigger area.

Ok, firstly here is a side pic of the wing. It shows off the angle nicely. A little flick up.

                              ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now, I seem to be getting really terrible at them lighting mods

Whats this? Seems to be my lower left reflector with some hole of light coming through

                              ??

Found an LED light strip for a couple dollars. Drew a line down the middle. Marked some cut holes

                              Good size for drill bit?

Drilled through the plastic to the beginning of the reflectors

Sat him inside. Wasn't sure if the circuit would work if I cut off the excess

Silicone that sucker in! Might need to use something better above the exhaust...

                              Such stock

                              Better. Use a flat blade

Run that **** up through the little exit air vent as per my previous couple of posts and solder on to the lower tail light that lights brighter when brake is on

                              WALLLAHHH

Annnd with the brakes on. (top tail light now on)

All finished (top rear light was playing up)

Got to be a bit different right?
