So I got the cable today and loaded up VCDS... Turns out Skoda Australia customer care and their "technical department" know jack all about their own cars, not only did my 118 have the cabling and the globes (as stated in my earlier post) but after about 10 minutes inside VCDS I have now enabled the following quite easily
        - Needle Staging (the sweep thing it does when you start the car) [17 Instruments / Adaptation 10 / select Staging from the dropdown]

        - Coming Home Lights via Fogs instead of headlights [09 Central Elec / 07 Long Coding / Long Coding Helper / Byte 17, bit 3 tick the box]
        - Cornering Fog lamps [09 Central Elec / Coding 07 / Long coding helper / Byte 14, tick the box]
        - DRL from the little "not optioned or connected" bulbs next to the fogs [09 Central Elec / Coding 07 / Long Coding Helper / Byte 15, bit 6 tick the box.

so everything they said couldn't be done I have now done. Thanks to the interwebz and forums like VWWatercooled and Briskoda, it's the guys around here that without them we would not have all the cool stuff we can do in VCDS and we would be at the mercy of the dealer network with their, for want of a better word, lack of knowledge of their own cars.

I am already now looking to see what other cool things I can do in VCDS but there is a bit of a lack of Skoda coding documents out there, you've really got to search and search and weed through all the junk to find the gold.

I do have one I'm interested in and that is Flashing Stop lights when emergency braking. Just like in the mercs and other newer high end euro's.

Glad you worked it all out! VCDS is a handy tool to have, although chances are you have done all the tweaks you will every want already... from here on out it's for reading error codes (and helping fellow your fellow VAG enthusiasts).

Sadly the staging doesn't work on the 118TSI Golf

          Some ideas to look into:
Does the Skoda have hard buttons for the bluetooth phone? You can re-program them to a useful number of your choosing on the Golf...
Horn on unlock if you feel so inclined.

(although I assume you have flicked through the coding for each module to see what's there )

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

yeah I haven't really looked through everything yet but I will. Interestingly when I did the staging it said it didn't know a particular code so can it just use a default 12345 and I said yes and it worked still.

Horn on unlock I thought about it but I leave home very early in the morning and if I woke up my wife i'd never hear the end of it

Didn't work when you and I tried it early last year!!

zei20t and I enabled the brake light flash on emergency braking yesterday - eventually I'll find out if it works or not!!

It didn't work on my Golf either but I got it to work on a new Polo the other day

There are plenty of "things" the computer seems to know about but not all of them will work, best bet is to enable and test them one by one.

Wow good work.. How much did the cable cost? And is there any specific model cable that needs to be bought? Can't wait to do this to mine!

Everyone here will probably say to get a genuine RossTech cable for around $300 but for the poor people that's a bit of a stretch and they don't come up scond hand very often or cheap if they do. I payed $46 on eBay and got a second hand VagDiagnostics one which does exactly the same thing. I think new they are 120. It was easy as to do the coding too

them, and "DRL dim with indicator" where the 1st things i did when i got mine 2 yrs ago.
the RS has needle staging by default.
i haven't bothered with flashing lights with emergency braking. considering the number of times i plan on emergency braking, nil, i didn't bother.

u got a good price on the vcds cable

I rekon! I outbid the guy by a dollar in the last few seconds, auction snipe for the win hehehee.
I didn't bother with the DRL dim with indicator as the 118 DRL are no where near them

Not too sure, might I only allow you to read fault codes ie. be a lite cable. The cheapo Chinese cables are usually that. If you can afford it then get a RossTech if not then got the cheaper VagDiagnostics one both have full support, VagDiagnostics were really quick on the emails too

pic of what the DRL's look like, not too shabby. Would be cool with some CANBUS LED's though.
