  • New 2014 Octavia Spied!

I realise the new model isnt out yet but which of the petrol engines is the pick in the current model? The 90 or the 118? Is the extra grunt worth it for the 118 TSI? In particular for the wagon...

If the Australian version continue with the full sized spare I assume that some of the boot configurations shown will not be available here.
Also note that the media in socket on the dash which is required for iPod connectivity is proprietary and looks to be the same as the current MDI just moved out of the glove box. That's a shame.

I like the little repeater LED's in the mirrors so the driver can see them.
I also hope the headlight washers are as accurate as the ones shown. My current ones blow fluid everywhere.

The 1.8L (118 TSI) engine has won many awards and is a very good performer.
Its very close in performance to the 2.0L found in the vRS.
They use the 118tsi as the Octavia "Sport" in some countries.

        • I would have thought that there would be a considerable difference in performance between 118kW and 147kW(vRS). A 25% increase in power should be noticeable. If there isn't there would be something drastically wrong with one of the engines.

My only real concern with the 118 TSI is that it's mated to the 7 speed DSG if you take the auto option. I'm not convinced that the 7 speed DSG is a really good gearbox it seems to have been the subject of a lot of owner problems.

I have the 1.8L 118tsi m6 hatch. I think it's a great engine for general running about & highway cruising.

Anecdotally, I've heard that many of them come out of the factory with 120-125kw & a few have been dyno'd ex-factory at near 130kw but that could be dyno calibration.

I've had mine with a bluefin remap for the last 65,000km. I haven't had it dynoed & I take the remap peoples claims with a bucket of salt but I'd guess it's about 130-135kw & 310-320nm.

Average fuel consumption over 115,000km has been 6.7L/100km on 98ron fuel.

            It doesn't use oil.

I'd happily buy another VW group product with the 1.8L 118tsi (maybe not with the 7sp DSG)

I've never driven a 90tsi, so can't comment on that.

Agree about the 7 speed. I'd want about a year of the forums being quiet about juddery clutches & harsh shifts before I'd go down that track.

I've driven both the 118tsi & the 147tsi (both belt & chain versions) and the 147tsi definately goes better - especially if you have a full load on board or you are giving it some welly. OTOH, for 80% of how most people drive, the 118tsi punches well above it's weight & performs better than you'd expect. I've had a few of my car-club mates drive it & they've all been impressed.

Obviously 147tsi>118tsi>90tsi but how often do you need it?

When I bought mine the vRS was $10k/30% more & there wasn't 30% more appointments / pleasure / fun in it.

Nah. My Mrs is the main bread-winner in the family. She pays all the bills. All my money goes into my bank account to do with as I wish. The Mrs only has a vague idea what i earn & how much is there & doesn't question my spending habits.

I was totally committed to buying a Golf GT diesel or a GTI. Told the salesman I was ready to put my money down & he told me that there was some silly amount of wait time so i decided to go with Octavia vRS. On my daily commute in the falling-to-pieces Mk3.5 2.0L Cabrio Isuddenly had an epiphany that I was shelling out ~$40k to sit in a traffic jam on the M5. I then went to Skoda to test drive an Elegance diesel & I wasn't totally impressed & the salesperson suggested I try the 118tsi Elegance & I was hooked. She offered me $13500 trade on the falling-to-pieces Cabrio (paid $14500 for it 18 months earlier) & priced the Octy at $30k drive away so it was an offer i couldn't refuse.

I kept the $10k difference between Elegance & vRS & added another $10k to it & took the family to the UK for a month. Money well spent.

I love this Octy. It's a great all-rounder & I look forward to driving it every time I put the key in the ignition.

the 1.8L 118kw TSI found in the skoda is only 0.6 secs shy getting to 100 from 0, in hatch form. 7.2 vs 7.8.
don't forget the 118tsi found in VW is a 1.4 turbo-super charged unit.

agree with the 7 spd dsg.
but the 118 tsi is also comes with a 6 spd manual too. i can't b sure if the manual version was made available here in oz.

I took the power figures from the Skoda Australia website.
0-100 times mean jack s*#t unless you get your thrills accelerating up freeway on ramps. In the real world the additional torque of the 147 motor when passing with a load of passengers is what you will notice.
Having said that to get back to the original query imo the 118 is a great motor. I would be more than happy to own a car with it fitted as long as the car did not have the 7 speed DSG.

                                30Nm extra (250 vs 280) ain't that significant.
