Tsi engine gone

I am sooo stressed, bought a golf with problems and now it will cost me 5000k to fix the engine. I bought a lemon, it's a 2010 tsi golf and needs a new engine. 😡😡😡😡😡

Firstly where did you buy the car , if from a dealer you have 5,000km
Or 3 months warranty.
Even if it was slightly over You still might be covered
If you bought Private. You have no recourse I'm afraid.
You can buy a good second hand engine from EBay with low km for about
$1,500. Another $1,000 to get it installed.

Sorry to hear this. Unfortunately it's not an uncommon issue with the 118TSI.

As Ian said investigate your optinos if you bought from a dealer.

Otherwise you'll need to find a "donor" engine and transplant it into your car.

Aaaand another one bites the dust. Sorry to hear but do people not research these 118TSI's before buying them?

Every 2 days theres someone complaining about a 118TSI with a blown engine. Wait until the DSG gearbox goes too.

I suggest someone start a thread on here for everyone to list their engine failure details. As Lucas R said, there seems to be one every couple of days. The DSG failures got a lot of media coverage and that led to VW pulling their collective fingers out.

It would be handy to use when discussing the issue with dealers and might also be useful to suggest that if you are not getting any joy, a phone call might be made to a TV station. It is just not on in this day and age that an engine cannot last more than 6 years particularly when all servicing schedules have been adhered to. That in my view is not fit for purpose. We have a lot of members on this forum now. We should be able to use that to our mutual advantage.

Fortunately I have not been affected by this but I feel there needs to be some justice done here.

There is a MASSIVE thread about this on briskoda, a UK site, specifically in relation to the timing chain tensioner (OP I am not assuming this is what has happened with your motor):

There isn't a similar thread on this forum and perhaps some owners aren't particularly keen to share their experience or nor do they want to air their problem to the public. Some owners may want to fix it and flick their cars or in some cases, not fix it and flick it on to unsuspecting buyers.

By the way, the problem is not specific only to VW, but to Skoda's with the same engine / parts.

The preventative fix is surprisingly simple, if not a bit expensive due to the labour involved.

Looks like geovRS has already linked it previously and unfortunately, with probably the same issue ...

Feel your pain Waz... This was me 2 months ago, spent $10000 on a tidy 04/09 golf 118tsi with high line interior and thought what a bargain! Checked it all out (bought privately) and seemed 100% fine until I drove it home... The car went into limp mode, limped her home and popped the hood and heard this god awful rattle under the bonnet. Freaked out and had it towed to VW to get a prognosis, I got one and it wasn't good! Timing chain tensioner shot and I was quoted $3900 to repair. I obviously wasn't happy but thought meh what can I do right? So VW Springwood sorted that for me, they called me and said we have an issue! What is that? Cylinder 3 has a misfire and we can't give you a prognosis unless you pay us $1200 to pull the engine out and apart. I was deep in the muck by now and very much commited so I told them to go ahead... They called me a couple of weeks later to tell me the rings were gone and I required all four Pistons to be replaced at a cost of approx $6000. I told them to put in for a good will claim and they did... This was the final outcome...

timing chain $3900 (no cover from VW)
engine rebuild $6500 (VW covered 50% of the parts)- cost me $4300
vw paid for a hire car for 3.5weeks
was without the car for almost 2 months
3rd owner and 2/3 of the services done with VW

call vw and politely insist they help you, 50/50 odds of help but that's better than you footing the bill yourself, I wouldn't gamble on a second hander with the 118tsi. Atleast with VW I get a 2yr warranty on parts and labour. Good luck and please keep us posted on your progress!

It's puzzling, the 118tsi is not a new engine. Is it only the earlier models doing this? My MY12 died at 90,000km!
