  • QLD VWDCQ - motorsport day

The club has been discussing what we can do to add to the scene in qld, im attempting to promote the club to both air & water...
your all vw enthusiasts so mingle dammit!
...so im attempting to gauge interest in the club running a day where we can actually USE our vw's for fun driving!
circuit days are expensive but that is my end game.
however without the little steps to promote the use of our vw's i cant get a solid argument behind me for the idea so...
    baby steps.
whos keen for a motorkhana day???????
Motorkhana - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia < see that if your not sure what im on about.
essentially if you can drive your car you can be part of the event
no pressure bit of fun basic of basic events, learn a little about your car etc etc
Would YOU and YOUR car be keen for a day of driving around cones in various layouts all day with a bunch of other vw enthusiasts?

I hope the poll options are varied enough for everyone
PS if you clicked onto this post PLEASE VOTE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

-without varied events the scene dies witht he last generation of enthusiast - remember that.

For motorkhana i would be okay with up to $50.

For a proper day out on the track i would be willing to pay up to $100.

Would be good to get a whole day track session in if we could, i reckon that would get a few people motivated.
Keep up the good work getting it all together.

copied from avd response, similar points have been raised/addressed...

PS those that have voted please post afterwards, idealy with reasons why/why not

especially money, the truth behind it all is ANYTHING is expensive when moving car is involved these days and there must be a happy medium between numbers competing/entered and $$$ outlay from each, to make it cheap there has to be more entrants, but theres a point when too many people running takes away the quality of the day/value for money for those running.

i recently attended an event, 20ish entered, just over $100 each, covered the costs, everyone got stacks of time in their cars, everyone came away feeling they had solid value for money from the day - NOTE THIS WAS NOT A FULL CIRCUIT DAY, if you can find a way to run a circuit event here for that kind of $$$ PLEASE COME TO A MEETING AND JOIN THE CLUB ASAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now ask yourself, is it worth MORE to you to save a few $$$ to spend the bulk of the day in a queue waiting for your turn again or to get most enjoyment/bum in seat time would you be prepared to pay a little more?

hypothetically/in dream land it will work like this
motorkhana - gauge interest, introduce those not usually into this kinda thing to it at a basic of basic level, thats not crazy expensive...
demand rises, entrant numbers rise, run out of room at X venue. experience rises too, people look for more of a challenge...
hillclimb maybe? - more technical, more expensive, hopefully counteracted by more entrants, again keeping the happy medium between entrant cost Vs idle time waiting for your turn
ultimately, a circuit day to COMPLIMENT club vw sydney sprints at wakefield park, how much interest would it bring from interstate if you could run against your fellow dubbers at different tracks EVERY YEAR??? who would of thought of that ever happening?

-if anyone from vw club sydney is upset this is cutting your grass, sorry- even if it happens ill still drive the 1100kms to watch/participate @ wakefield, even if the weather says -2deg with a chance of rain.

Hillclimg at Mot Cotton would be an interesting one.
Shouldn't cost as much as a full day track rental but also gives you a nice entry into motorsport.

Hmm, might be best to just run a day session at QR then to give everyne some runoff room.

Would be great fun to get something like this going, in reality $100 is not a lot of money when it comes to motorsport events. If you hope to pay less than this then I might suggest a day at kingston park as they will be happy to let you play but using your own car at any kind of track will up the cost significantly.

Hows lakeside going these days, is it still open to the public?

Might I ask what club you are referring to? I'm not much for show and shine's, but don't mind the occasional drive day or motorsport event...
As has been said, I'd happily pay more for a track day / sprints session, but interested in an alternate event as the circuit work is expensive to run.
I have given up on the Saturday sprints since I sold the 172, too many cars and poor organisation, but am hoping to get out to a Wed sprint soon. Another consideration for a track day might also be Morgan Park, great track - fast, not as hard on brakes and tyres like QR is, plenty of runoff.

Club im reffering to is VW Drivers Club Qld - VWDCQ, meetings at morningside rsl 2nd wednesday every month

Mt cotton, not forgiving on errors - bad idea for newbies

qld raceway - boring as bat**** unless your cars super fast in a straight line, designed for v8supercars & spectators not corner lovers, also... how much money do you want to pay to do this?? trust me im trying but the $$$ is insane

lakeside - $$$$$$$ decent track though, has character, the older racing longer than ive been breathing types are dead keen to come from everywhere for a run there but again $$$$$$$$$$$$$

morgan park, see cams, the council, the other people that have days there, convince people to go out of their way that far & still pay the $$$$$$$$$

carnell park, we got a day there last year for bug-in but blood out of stone is eeasier than getting approval to use the track, council/locals complain about noise too much - bye bye track, oran park anyone?

running any full size event will NOT happen unless theres 30 of you willing to drop $500-1k EACH at this stage, yup not going to happen without the baby steps to make it ultimately cheaper with more people, more backing from sponsors etc

the other option is create a club rivalry for a bit of fun, vw V mini, whole vw family? vw, audi, porsche, lambo, etc - but adding the rest of that group makes it near impossible to setup an event that appeals to everyone - adds more headaches than benefits, again its finding the happy medium between an alternative marque for a close yet varied enough competition to keep it interesting, and also hopefully to make the spectators go wow i want to enter this next time!

thanks for the feedback so far too guys! and yep im pushing **** uphill to make it happen but im determined to get there eventually!

venue is pretty much sorted if i can get interest and a date that suits but we are nowhere near that yet, not worth approaching them formally untill i have enough people keen, and yes the driver training at mt cotton was considered

as it stands combined forum numbers indicate 13 people would be willing to shell out to make it happen, sorry the sub $50 option doesnt make anything happen unless theres 50ish people running, want to wait 40mins for 2mins of fun, go karting on their short circuit (recent bucks party disaster) - nobody left feeling they got good value for money which is what im trying to avoid, when i have 20-30 people willing ill go begging for more details & a date, dont just change your answer, get others to answer to make up the numbers that wont help anyone in the end

thanks to those willing to pay prices realistic by todays standards

I'm down with spending more money on events. I'm constantly trying to get people to attend events hence why I organise them or it wouldn't happen.
I have recently joined the VWDCQ. They have alot of knowledge and we (watercooled) need to get more involved. I"m sure STIDUB would be able to get the numbers but in Brisbane There are only like 9 Watercooled Members in the club(could be wrong). Get more involved. If you want to have the fun that is associated with owning a VW you got to be willing to participate, Not just here online but in the real world. Its all well and good TALKING about the cars. Trust me its more fun getting out there and having fun with like minded people than just typing about it.

So come to a meeting and have some fun. Next meeting of the VWDCQ is 13th July at morningside rsl. I went to my first meeting this month and was suprised (lots of old aircooled farts) But to get more out of your car come along and have some fun.

The next Euro Car Meet which I am organising is 17th July @ Newmarket. Check out the thread in the Events tab for more info on attendance and attractions....... There will be Busy Red Bull girls there handing out RED BULL.

@STIDUB Good on ya for wanting this to happen. I want it and am happy to help pull some resoursces together. Chat to ya in person in 3 weeks lol

im keen and depending on what type of day easily pay up to 150.

you pay like 120 for you and partner to go to dreamworld or other places etc. 150 is nothing for a bit of legal fun to push your car
