    ---

    Hi everyone,

Planning is underway for this year's WA DOVW in December.

As most of you know, the judging has been a bit contentious in the last few years and the categories are heavily biased towards the Aircoolers. The Club wants to reorganise this so there is a better spread of categories across all models.

I've been asked to get some ideas and feedback from you guys to find out how they can better accommodate Watercoolers. They are after ideas for new categories or ways to better cover the newer Dubs.

I have a few ideas already, but over to you - discuss! Let's see what we can collectively come up with!

For people who haven't been to DOVW before, the show is run by the VW Club of WA Inc. Volkswagen Club of Western Australia (Inc)

Currently, there are 25 categories in total, with the following categories for Watercooled vehicles.

    13. Watercooled to 1997 (Golf I - III, Passat, Polo, Scirocco etc)
    14. Watercooled 1998 onwards (Golf IV - V, Passat, New Beetle, Bora, Polo etc)
    15. Watercooled Performance (GT, GTI, R32 and all R series VWs, all years)

    16. VW Affiliate (Audi, Skoda, Seat, Bentley, Lamborghini etc)

The first two categories are very broad and since you can only enter 1 category per vehicle, the judging has been a bit messy sometimes depending on who enters which category on the day.

Some of the early categories for specific model Beetles etc may have only had 1 or 2 entrants anyway which is going to happen more and more as the old cars slowly disappear, so time to reorganise the categories & keep the show rolling!

I'd like to see a few more Watercooled categories created to spread the range and give everyone who enters a bit more of a chance in their relevant area.

    Discuss!

I think the first point of order needs to be to get more watercoolers down there.

Im not sure of the exact numbers last year but im guessing there was about 15-20 of us. I think a much larger presence is needed to convince the VW Club to create more awards. But to get more people there is probably the hardest thing to do.

Yeah agreed, it's a bit of a catch 22 situation. I know for a while the local Mk V community was very anti-DOVW but that may have been a select few who were overly vocal so I don't know what the feeling there is now. They seem to have died down a fair bit although I only look there very occassionally.

DOVW gets discussed enough on here, so dunno what else we can do to get more members along... no one can say they didn't know about it.

The DOVW Planning meeting is 16th June which I've been asked to attend with any ideas we come up with, if anyone else wants to come as well. Otherwise the routine committee meetings are held at JH VW 6:30pm on the 2rd Wednesday of each month.

mmm 3,881km from my house... mmm

Maybe a touch too far to drive, especially with thew kids, but I suppose I could always fly over

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

The theme of the 2010 DotVW is celebrating 35 years of VW Golf's in Australia.
First Golf was registered in Oz in 1975. Car of the Year (COTY award) in 1976

Big focus on watercoolers this year.
Not sure why you deleted your post Grey 57, unless it was intended for another state's DOVW discussion, but if this is the case then even more reason for us to get the Watercooled categories sorted out sooner rather than later and get more people along!

(Edit: I see you reposted this in the VIC thread)

I saw on the SEDF booklet/programme they had categories like "Best Mk1 Golf - standard", "Best mk1 Golf - Modified", and so on it went through the generations. Ithink thats a good way to do it. Then you could still have some categories for your Passats, Jettas and Vento's. I'm not sure if cars after 2006ish really need trophies just yet tho, unless they're insanely modified. But I know of none in WA. You could probably chuck the Corrado's and Scirocco's in together too.

On other issues, no-one gives a flying f*@k about rocker cover racing anymore!!! It should be saved for the 'kids area'! The organisers need to get real and encourage the local workshops to display bigger and better stalls, at Golfwagen me and Joe were talking about getting some old 'barn find' Mk1's or old Audi's or something and have them sitting on trailers, getting some KW merch together and doing a simple coilover install demo under a tent, or having some milltek exhausts on display and getting a customer car there with a m'tek on it to give an aural demo!!

Or what about hiring a portable rolling road for the day???

There's also many of us half way through build projects. We could trailer one or two down to show the public the 'work in progress'.

We also definately NEED a vwwatercooled tent!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Should include stickers, flyers, some of our own cars parked next to it that are big features on our forum *cough, my mk2... cough cough* and a laptop with the site running and projected onto a big screen... if they wont accept us in their old fart aircooled world, we'll force our watercooled arses right in their face and make our presence felt!!!

The club also need to get around to ALL the VW related workshops, garages, wreckers, and dealers in the the entire Perth area and drop off loads of flyers so non-club type people know about the show.

Oh yea, and invite the motoring press along!

                  ^^^^ what he said x 1 million

fantastic ideas - especially the Dyno for the day - brilliant (except for the december weather and my lack of aftermarket intercooler...FML)

i think the issue is not many new series Dubbers even know we exist, hence the low cruise numbers and such.

Perhaps an endorsed flyer for the site that could be printed and handed to the hot chick who drives the black MK5 Polo GTI in Morley when spotted

as for new catagories...interior tech/stereo catagorie?

Great ideas Wade!! I was speaking to Joe the other day so perhaps I could donate my car for a KW install I know he sponsors some of the trohpies already, but it would be nice to get a few of the other shops on board too.

Flicking though the Nats thread from NSW last week too and I reckon we'd do well to have an undercover area. A couple of times the show has been pretty hot which might deter people from coming as well. I like the idea of a vwwatercooled tent too as we haven't had the forum name on display before. I'm going to suggest they have designated areas for the day too as it has appeared to be a bit random before, might be worth having a pre-registraiton form etc.

John Hughes apparently puts out club info with all their new cars sold but that won't put them on here, only points them to the VW Club website.

                    Keep the ideas coming guys

Having been involved with running a perth based car club in the past, there are a lot of things to be considered, most of them covered above.
A proper "banner" style thing to put up at shows is important, as is a group of members who are passionate about the idea of going to shows.
A tent/marquee is very important too given the wet and heat, and makes it much nicer for people to be able to hang around and chill out

Unfortunately numbers matter at these sort of events, so everyone should get behind them!
                      p.s. need best Bora award

                        idea.

someone with some computer skillz make up a banner to put into circulation at the top of this website?

may get those who dont frequent the meets and events section to take notice of it?
