Sorry but can someone please explain what's good about this? Putting a tyre on a rim it doesn't fit onto properly is unsafe! And it looks crap too... Saw it in person when I was there and it made me laugh.
Yes I am serious, I honestly don't understand what's good about this...

Tyre stretching allows a more agressive offset/wider wheel to be used.
The sidewall stretches inwards to inhibit scrubbing on the wheel arch.
It's part of the poke/dump idea and looks good if done well.
It is mainly used on older euro/jap cars.
It's all over vortex as well.
ok thanks for clarifying... certainly not something that should be recommended. it COMPLETELY changes how the tyre works and the grip level would be a whole lot less. At least it was only for a car show I suppose.
Actually a stretched tyre (within safe limits) can improve sidewall stiffness & reduce flex in the tyre. Handy if you're drifting, but also noticable during spirited driving.
Race rubber have different construction, hence why no race cars have stretched tyres. (also decreases tyre width, for high powered cars = less grip, etc etc etc)

It's better for the environment. Less rubber = less embodied energy, plus less waste of natural rubber resources. SEDF Eco Warriors Represent!
