  • VIC Victorian High Country Super Mega Cruise Discussion

    Hey guys

we have been tossing this idea around for a couple years now and no-one has gone through with it.

Id love to do a Victorian high country cruise but as you may know its a loooooong drive. Having said that there are some of the best driving roads in Australia right here in our back yard.

Im thinking that it would work best as an overnighter spending an evening in Wangaratta or Bright or something. Then attacking Mt Hotham/Great alpine road. Given we have events in Nov, Dec, and Feb already in the planning stages that leaves january perhaps open?

Obviously its will be a pretty hardcore drive so im not expecting a huge attendance.. But.. A drive of this nature would be truly epic! Anyways.. Lemme know if there is any interest out there and If so ill see if i can put together a route or something.

This sounds really good. I'm interested depending on whether I am going away at or around that time.

You guys should do a over night camping trip. Now thats what I call a proper road trip and see the country the proper way !!

If you havent camped since high school, most camp site have hot showers now days. $10-20 MAX entry fee per car. BYO BBQ + "grape juice" = a night of fun. I would love to do one for NSWians.

thats a half decent idea, especially with the warmer weather coming up

having a good yarn around a campfire is great fun!

I'd be totally keen to go for a drive and make it into a holiday.
I'd probably not drive the VR6 though. The MX5 would be much better suited to touge drives. ('toe-gay' is Japanese for winding mountain road)
January will be well hot, overheating would be a major issue with these cars, am I right?
                    Either way, count me in.

To toegay or not to toegay ......

Overheating? Why would that be a problem?

When I go near the High Country it's usually in the Jackaroo, so fun can be had on tracks like this http://203.19.59.184/node/89 and these http://www.4wdlinks.com.au/gallery/V...gh-country/aaa

But the GTI would love a run too, just need to figure out how to fit the tent and the 50l Evakool in the back

If it's 40˚C or so, which is pretty likely, anything earlier than a MK4 won't like it as a guess. Hard driving in hot weather in cars designed for cool climates... Not cool.

"Mt Hotham has a summer daily mean temperature of 11.1°C whilst in winter it is -1.0°C. The prevailing wind across the Bogong High Plains and Mt Hotham is from the north-west. South-easterly winds, often associated with fog and mist, are also quite common."

"With its fresh mountain air and temperatures that average 25 degrees, the location is ideal for escaping the city heat and enjoying activities such as hiking, mountain bike riding and sightseeing." - and 4WDriving..and Dubbing

Very unlikely to be 40˚C up there - just google Mt Hotham summer temperature and you will find the two quotes above.

Cars earlier than MKIV may not like it up there, but it won't be because of heat - it's just because they can't go more than 50k from home
