Victorian High Country Super Mega Cruise Discussion
Ive driven the Great Alpine road and the others around there.. Tawonga Gap , Mansfield /Whitfield rd many, many times
Really worth the effort.
This is the route I normally do:
Melbourne-
Mansfield/Whitfield/Oxley/Myrtelford/ Bright or Dinner Plain O/Night stop depending on time or weather...
Bright/Mt Hotham/Dinnerplain/Omeo/ then North on the Tallangatta rd/past the Blue Duck Inn and West onto the new bitumen road going back into Falls creek just before Glen Willis.
Falls Creek/Tawonga Gap or back to Beechworth etc.

Them's bike roads. THe Harrietville motel is awesome, stayed there a few times, Pool tables, Swimming Pool and decent pizza. Ill keep an eye on this, might come along, but possibly on 2 wheels just to mix it up a bit.

Thanks for the suggestions.. Ill have a squiz at the map when i get a chance and see what could work well. I have driven a lot of those roads before but will be good to see what we can tie in..
My thoughts are probably to head out early on a saturday morning and spend the night somewhere. Then hit the road on sunday for a final epic drive. Im not sure about the camping idea.. Might not be to everyones taste? Im happy to rough it myself but im open to public opinion.. Maybe a caravan park with facilities may be the go? Cheap and cheerful with the prospect of onsite vans for the soft people out there
Hotham is my winter home!
I've done 35 nights there this snow season and driven up and down the hill about 10 times this year.
Accomm in Bright is cheap, or accomm on Hotham can be at some ski lodges.
Otherwise camping on the Omeo to Bruthen windy bit of road is very nice!
But, some low cars won't get down the goat tracks to the creek side camp spots!
I'd love to come, even if I was in the Holden Adventra.
My record is 21mins from the Hotham Village to Harrietville, and I then discovered the Adventra has temp sensors on the brakes to tell you they're hot! LOL!
...Cars earlier than MKIV may not like it up there, but it won't be because of heat - it's just because they can't go more than 50k from home
i'm sorry what?! Please tell me you're joking right.
my mk 1 diesel, made it from melbourne to sydney and back, and would do it again in a heart beat. I will take this rash statement as an ill-concieved joke.
Could be an interesting trip. I don't know that I'd do it. don't really have power for that kinda of action./

Haha, went fishing, caught one
But then you say you can't do it due to unsuitability of your vehicle
Just bring a tow-rope for the uphill bits

whilst i have no doubt your car could make the journey im unsure how much fun it would be driving up to the top of some of the highest mountains in victoria!
I think journeys like this one would be good with 2 people to a car as well given the amount of time that will be spent on the road would be nice to have company.

I didn't say my car was unsuitable, I didn't say I couldn't do it. I said it wasn't powerful enough. I'm sure the point of this trip isn't sight seeing - that I could do plenty fine, in my GLD with 50HP.
However. going for a spirited drive isn't the best of ideas, when you car has 50HP. I'm smart enough to know that. (that's the part where is said "power for that kind of action")
