Group Buy / EOI new generation DNS head units (RNS-510 alternative)
Sandy. Should I just order the ans810?
is it still s great unit?
It's up to you. I have said before that ANS is still a solid unit, the main flaws are that it can be a bit slow sometimes and its music functions are a bit limited. And of course many new and exciting things (trip recorder, OBD2, Android mirroring, auto sleep function etc etc) will come to the DNS and not the ANS, but whether these new and exciting things will be useful to you is for you to decide.
ok thanks the waiting is killing me . ha ha .. I know the second i order the ans series the dns will be ready and i will kick myself...
do you think by oct 1 they will have all the bugs worked out?
thanks

... this unit has experimental software that is littered with bugs... the software engineers left the juniors the task of fixing bugs while they moved on to develop the music library functions, only to find that the software now has more bugs than when they left it.
... have to wait for an updated firmware which I've been told will be worked on tomorrow and be released ASAP.
Not wanting to sound overly cynical but this doesn't sound good, and frankly is what's always wrong with Chinese knock-offs. They look good on specs but fall down in application.
I mean, what point of crap tolerance have we reached where our car radios take time to boot up and then behave like they're running on alpha software?
Given how long it takes a highly professional outfit like Apple to iron out bugs - often not until the next hardware release - I wouldn't hold my breath on this one.

Even then, major hardware/software companies still release products with bugs. Look at all the minor software updates that they all push. Hell, my iPhone 5 still hates my girlfriends wifi network and refuses to connect, when her 4 works fine :p (not just isolated to phones, my Sony Vaio Pro 13 didn't like her wifi either until Sony pushed an updated firmware for the wifi card etc).... even Intel face the same issues (See the Z87 chipset and the C3 USB3.0 bug).
Not being apologetic to Audiosources, if they really want to become a household name ala Kenwood/Pioneer etc, then they need to get their act together. But yea, the whole being a Chinese company argument as well.... it's all too easy for them to just throw a bunch of people at a project and not bother about what the quality is like. Easy to see with all the other generic units on the market... same hardware, same (crappy) software, just pushed onto the market and thats that.
I still have high hopes for the DNS, though (considering I fully paid heh). I think Audiosources have shown (looking at the ANS thread), that they continue to work on the software and push updates/fix bugs etc. At the end of the day, it still is much cheaper than an OEM unit (but the VAG units are made by VDO).... soooo yea.
For those looking for an intermediate option while waiting for the DNS, i'd suggest possibly checking out the Eonon units (D5152/D5153). They're cheap (~ under $300), same generic chinese hardware, but much better software (though not OEM at all), the shipping is fast, and for the money, they're pretty damn good. I've got one in my Prado, and I must say i'm pretty impressed, again, especially for ~$250 that I paid for it. Magnitudes better than the ****ty generic chinese unit in my Golf (3 main things i've noticed, the screen on the Eonon unit is wwaaaayyyy better, it's significantly faster, and the software is significantly better). Not a longterm replacement for the DNS by any stretch, but still worth a look if you can't wait *shrugs*
I'll hold out for the DNS, though. As long as it comes before I leave for summer work in late November :p

I have the strangest feeling that this unit will always be in alpha stage for software. Like get your head out of your @sses and get this unit done. I feel the final product may be full of glitches when it is released to the public, if it gets to mid September I may just have to pull out and use my ans unit or source an alternative 8" screen unit.

I don't see why. They released firmware updates to the ANS units so I don't see this being different. I can deal with glitches, hell every cell phone has had problems until software updates came out.
At least DKN is being honest about what is going on I stead of keeping everyone in the dark.
Any new hardware that is being developed and about to be released has problems. That is the nature of the beast.
If it falls on its face I'm just glad I paid with PayPal, but, I am not worried. After modifying my car for a long time I've become very patient with products and fixes. If you stay impatient you just cause yourself unnecessary stress. Keep calm and carry on!
True, and he is doing a good job at keeping us updated and I thank hum for that, however this would be the second or third delay due to software, makes one wonder if it will ever get finished without being replaced with another unit.
Audiosources might have been highly optimistic about release date but at least they aren't trying to make good on their promises by shipping something before its ready.

This Website isn't exactly putting their best foot forward:

I came very close to buying a Pioneer App Radio but when I looked in to it they took 4 months to patch the software for the iPhone 5 and even then it wasn't a patch for the whole range. The amount of additional adaptor cables that were required as a part of the patch looked chaotic and was costly!
No manufacturer is immune from these problems. We are also buying the first release which is more likely to suffer these kinds of delays. If anyone joined this group buy expecting it to be perfect and on time was either kidding themselves or hasn't done this before!

I sort of had a feeling this would happen... so I'm not entirely surprised. At least they didn't rush out an unfinished product. Still a bit disappointed though as I was looking forward to having an awesome satnav for my car.
Any chance of trying to negotiate a further discount? Especially given the fact that we'll essentially be the guinea pigs who will be testing the product for them while they iron out the bugs...
