  • I applaud all of us for being as patient as we have been. Unfortunately I am going to have to back out of this. The headache and the uncertainty of what we are receiving just isn't worth the hassle unfortunately.

I wish all of you the best. Sandy, I'll contact you about a refund.

Thanks again for your help Sandy, I know this was no fault of your own.

I think what you're getting at is actually a low pass filter anyway (as it's name suggests it allows low frequencies to pass through and nothing else. A high pass filter allows high frequencies through and nothing else - what you would use for tweeters. A band pass filter allows a specific band or range of frequencies through, and nothing higher or lower - what you might use for a mid range woofer)

The head unit will have an EQ so you can filter out the lower end to the speakers.

But the pre-amp is exactly that. It's not filtered or amplified in any way. That is all done by your external amplifier.

No need for the laymans terms, I'm an electrical engineer

            • I find this function on any aftermarket head unit you get at jb hifi. It stops the bass coming out the speakers (running off the head unit) while still sending bass to the sub (running off the amp).

Isn't that what a crossover does/should done by the amp/sub? Dunno, not sure if car subs work that way.

Nope. The idea is to remove bass from the speakers (which are running from the Dns/head unit) so that they can focus on playing better highs/mids. The sub and amp play the lows. This has to be done inside the head unit.

Ah, fair enough. I was just going off what i've seen from HT systems, where powered subs usually have a crossover switch, and you can also fiddle with it on the Amp side as well. I'm not a speakers guy anyways, more headphones/iems etc :p

                    • Sandy,

Any chance of getting an update on the "early" batch. It's getting way beyond a joke now.

Yeah that's just the EQ. Every modern head unit in existence has one in some form or another.

The RCA preouts are not affected by any changes made to the head unit EQ. Some do have separate EQ for the preouts though, so you can adjust your subwoofer level through the head unit for example.

                          Comment

                          • On the EQ topic, there is an option to adjust Bass, Mid and Treble frequency as well as a "Q" range (not sure what this is, I'm not much of an audiophile). That's separate from the normal EQ menu where you just turn Bass, Mid, Treble and Sub up and down. This is all when you are using the unit's built-in amp with its DSP chip.

If you have an aftermarket amp, my understanding is the same as Tobes_WIR35, and that is that the speaker as well as subwoofer outputs should send the raw unadjusted signal through for your amp to do the legwork. The amp connects to the speakers as well as the subwoofer, it does not just "play the lows". Frequency response, gain, noise, distortion etc are all balanced by the amplifier. It processes the audio signals, including applying any HPF / LBF if the amp has that feature, and outputs the adjusted signal to the speakers / sub.

Some devices do have pre-out EQ but anything much more than basic volume adjusting for pre-outs is frowned upon. After all the point of having a shiny big amp is to have that shiny big amp do the audio processing.

Regarding the early batch, it seems today they are doing final testing of CAN-Bus updates with the unit installed in the car. The CAN-Bus update issues appeared resolved with the unit in isolation but after the decoder made communications with the car's CAN-Bus it still can run into the botched update issue. They anticipate this to be fixed tomorrow. The reason they will not send the unit is because until they apply the necessary firmware fix to stop this issue, the updates need to be done at the factory (some form of bench flashing I assume instead of the normal SD card procedure) to prevent risk of bricking the unit.

In the meantime my incessant requests have paid off and the manager gave me (much deserved) extra priority so so far 24 units have already been produced as of today for my first batch order, ready to ship once the CAN-Bus fix is applied. In total the early batch has nearly 30 units so fingers crossed by the end of the week they will ALL ship.
