Its still faster than any VW ever made, and with more tuning potential. Thats significantly meritable anyway.

I must say, there are some half decent quality cars coming out of Korea now.

As said before, Hyunai i30, dont knock it until youve been for a good drive in one, I was amazed when we drove a diesel one to melb and back and now my house mate has a diesel wagon i30 as a company car and its not half bad! Still no where near the build quality and attention to detail put in euro cars, but for their price, warranty and parts, not all that bad....

(anyone know of any ECU upgrades for a TD i30???)

My wife's 1st car in Australia (2003) was a Hyundai Getz ... it was the only daily driver we've ever owned (27 cars & counting to date) that had to be towed into the dealer 3 times whilst under warranty ..... I've had to tow race cars before and a BMW once (not the cars fault .... the mechanic did not tighten the oil cooler piping properly and the M3 revving to 8000rmin promptly popped it off)

Like Wheels said recently "the i30 is like a 1 series (BMW) done badly ... only the 1 series is already done badly ...."

I know Toyota is most worried about Hyundai as a future competitor but based on my and recent other family's experiences I wouldn't if I were them ...... guess they (Toyota) forgot about VW creeping up on them an challenging for world #1 spot ......

By the time Hyundai (or any other Korean manufacturer) builds a car that is more than an aplliance I'll be too old to care and I'm still a long way off that ....
Current: 2023 MY23 T-Roc R Lapiz Blue + Beats Audio + Black pack 2018 MY19 Golf R manual Lapiz Blue + DAP) 2014 Amarok TSI Red (tuned over 200kw + lots of extras) 2013 Up! manual Red 2017 Polo GTI manual Black Previous VWs and some others ...

End of the day you can only build quality to a certain point on a vehicle that retail's at 20k regardless of how well a car tests on a car review page, let's review them after 10 years and let's see which vehicle is still ahead and you will find VW will be leagues ahead of any korean made "stuff"
And thats the nature of it, they can make cars cheaper becuase of the cheap labour and the corners they cut to slap a car together using cheap trim clips, seals, material e.t.c that are designed to last only for the warrany peroid because it is Cheap, and thus makes the car cheaper,
They are looking to build cars in quantity not quality
And of course everyone is entilted to their own opinion and this is my opinion, i have worked on many make's and model's and i put Holden barina's/captiva's/ Viva's, KIA made vehicles right at the bottom of my list for quality You have been warned LOL

You could say the same thing about the 2.8 / 3.2 / 3.6 VR6's, such a terrible, terrible design...

I suspect those numbers would be skewed somewhat... Would they have taken into consideration the amount of parts-sharing and platform swapping the manufacturers do across different brands and models? For example, the Kluger and the Lexus RX would share the same platform and say something like the VW's and Audi's would share similar platforms?

With that said, I think the major issue with the Korean/Asian cars is that we don't get the exciting models to beef up the image of the brand.

Motor vehicles these days are more than just a mode of transport from A to B for the majority of people. They are a way of life and a reflection of who you are...

If the Toyota's/Subaru's and the Kia's were to bring in sporting/hero brands like they have in their respective countries, I'm sure it would change our perception of them. Anyone seen the Subaru/Nissan and Toyota lineup in Japan, half the cars we don't get here...

Fortunately or unfortunately as the case may be, our society views the European cars as the upper echelon's of success and social status ... as a result a $100,000 Japanese car would probably be better built and more reliable but would probably never sell... Yet a BMW (which most models are made in the US) with a "BMW is awesome" tax on it would still sell despite reliability or most owners call 'character'
