People seem to always blame the last person who touched their car, but is that person always at the fault? I don't think so.

I don't believe that a qualified good mechanic would knowingly leave the fallen object inside the rocker cover. Also, he would have to be very unlucky to jam the funnel or oil filler nozzle there. Despite the plate in there is held in place with the indents only.

Your fight should be with the manufacturer, who designed it that way, because as I see it, that plate if not secured properly from the manufacture could fall in (work itself loose by vibrations) at later time.

To the OP , have you topped up your engine oil in the past? There is a good chance that you did, than you didn't, so you will have to prove that it wasn't your funnel or whatever tool you used, that was the cause of the failure.

Please, don't get me wrong, I'm just thinking what else could cause your problem?

Well to answer your question no i have never filled the oil up in my car at all. Never had the light come on so never needed to. I've always gotten it serviced before the recommended date. My beef was with the manufacturer but they offered me compensation for an out of warranty car so they actually did their part. TBH it's a bit of both parties but VWA helped... my mechanic hasn't or is even aware of this situation.

Then you're the lucky one, if your engine never needed oil top up.

Insurer. What is that going to do. I can't claim this on insurance?

A quick note to anyone watching, waiting for the oil light to come on before adding oil is not recommended for engine longevity. Regardless the OP is in a sticky spot. I would assume any claim against the mechanic would not likely be successful due to the very existence of this thread, regardless I tend to agree with Transporter. Most likely the VW is a poor design.

I agree... and if I didn't take it there it probably would have cost a lot less... or more I have no idea. They gave me 30% off the cost of parts and labour was cheaper then any mechanic I got quoted for.

I for one agree it is VW manufacturing fault and they never put the part back after all was done anyways...
