I don't believe that a qualified good mechanic would knowingly leave the fallen object inside the rocker cover. Also, he would have to be very unlucky to jam the funnel or oil filler nozzle there. Despite the plate in there is held in place with the indents only.
Your fight should be with the manufacturer, who designed it that way, because as I see it, that plate if not secured properly from the manufacture could fall in (work itself loose by vibrations) at later time.
To the OP , have you topped up your engine oil in the past? There is a good chance that you did, than you didn't, so you will have to prove that it wasn't your funnel or whatever tool you used, that was the cause of the failure.
Please, don't get me wrong, I'm just thinking what else could cause your problem?
