Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • The value of accessories when selling

I have a 2010 5-door Mk 6 Golf GTI. Redbook provides a guide to its value when reselling or trading in. If my car has the 18 inch Detroits, MDI audio interface, reverse camera and all round tinting what Dollar value do you think these together would add?

In my opinion - it depends.

In general, a buyer looking at a car that is more than 5 years old is going to care less about the accesories/options fitted to the car than they will about the cars general condition and mileage.

As an experienced buyer of second hand cars, personally I would not pay more for the options you've mentioned - but thats because of all of those options, the only one of any real value to me might be the wheels (if they are in good condition) - the ICE, reverse camera etc, all nice sure, but all can be fitted at relatively low cost these days.

....so, lets say $1000 to the right person... maybe

I wouldn't expect those options to add much if at all to the value. What they will do is make the car easier to sell. To be honest the options above (except perhaps the 18" wheels) would be on most Mk6 GTI's.

You will generally get more for a low km, mint condition (showroom condition interior/exterior) with good service history than you will for the options.

Redbook is a bit of a guide and quite a few dealers look at it when offering trade-in prices. Also jump on carsales to see what the similar mileage/age cars are going for.

Do you have Bluetooth? That would be a big one that people want these days (not to mention it basically makes your MDI redundant).

The option xenon headlights would be another big plus for a second hand buyer as there are very few Mk5 and Mk6 GTI's with these optional headlights, and they look much better than the normal headlamps.

Its been shown that base models generally hold their value better than optioned vehicles although some higher end versions (such as SSV Commodores) can be the best performed.

As has been said, the extras are what helps a buyer choose between vehicles. It could also give a higher mileage sample against a lower, or a model year against a .5 year.
