Run Auto Parts also sell Mann oil filters at a competitive price. Mann is one of the suppliers who manufacture the OEM oil filter for VW Group.

I had a magnetic sump plug and washers from ECS Tuning, but found that i always had oil leaking out. Swapped back to the OEM sump plug and no more leaks.

Thats because at some stage the plug was overtightened ! Once its overtightened once they start to leak , the more overtightened the worse the leak is . My own Golf R which has 90k kms and oil changed every 5k kms is bone dry .

I've now gone back to OEM sump plug.

Used the ECS sump plug for a couple of years, changed the oil last week and used a new washer ECS provided (found them) and leaks overnight.

After hand tightening the plug I could tighten with a rachet without much torque but even after 1/2 a turn it never felt very tight, almost like it was stripping the pan. Not a good feeling.

Switched to the OEM plug today and after hand tightening it, it was very tight after a 1/6th of a turn. Felt much more reassuring.

Anyway will only use a new OEM plug for every oil change from now.

Maybe the ECS plug was overtightened once before, maybe it wasn't. It's in the bin now. I had an iffy feeling about it from day one due to the brass washer (definately not copper).

For years now, I use a torque wrench for the sump plug & the plastic cover [on mime] on top of the oil filter. My sump plug doesn't leak & the oil filter cover is not too tight to remove. I wouldn't bother fitting a magnetic drain plug.

Most likely what happened is that every time you remove sump plug you over tightened it, more and more until the thread stripped.

You probably need to buy an oversized sump plug kit (eBay is your friend).
When reinstalling sump plug, use normal length spanner and think about it as it was just M8 bolt not M14.

It’s not unusual that I often need to reach for 600mm breaker bar and use a lot of force to undo some sump plugs, even the oil filters.

While turning the sump plug try to wedge the screw driver under the socket and apply the pressure like you would want to pry it out of the sump, hopefully it will come out.

They're good for the blind holes, not so good repairing thread in the sump.
